HI everyone : I am rebuilding a 1967 bronco I have put in power steering from a old ford truck I cant remember what I polled it off of but it fit on the out side of the frame I have had it for about 6 years . The question I have is if I put my pitman arm on facing backwards my wheels turn the wrong way , so if I turn my steering wheel to the left the wheels go right or turn right they go left I was not aware it it doing this when I look in to doing this in everything I read they say nothing about this it what kind of ford steer box to get . Can someone please help with this. Rick
You probably have a late 70's F150 4x4 box but you need to convert it to steer correctly. Here is a tech page on how to do the conversion. The so called '4x2 box' required is found in almost all Ford trucks built in the 80's and 90's (F150, 250, 350, 4x2, 4x4, etc.). I believe it's even in the Ranger and Explorer. This is nice because it's cheap and easy to find.
That tech page is provided by BC Broncos. They sell that power steering box already converted and rebuilt. My brother-in-law just bought the complete kit from them because finding the required 4x4 box around here is hard, and the ones we did find were expensive.
Sounds like you've got the 4x4 box ('76-'79 F-150 4x4 OR 78-79 Big Bronco). Best box you can have only it turns the wrong way as yours does, in stock form, this box has the pitman facing FORWARD. WCB has the best tech page I've seen to convert these for EBs using the "4x2" worm gear. Super easy to do! I like using the worm gears from the pre-97 rangers as they're light trucks with little to no wear on the steering gear.
Hi I just changed the parts in my steering box , when I opened the box a lot of power steering fluid came out , do I have to worry about putting fluid back in there or will it do it by it self . Rick
take care of itself. Just be sure to bleed all the air out
"bench bleed" AND fill B 4 boltin up/hookin up the lines. When these steps R completed fill res. (more fun w/a friend) and spin wheel 'lock to lock' several Xs to bleed further. Fill @ res. very incrementally or it will spit out all the extra. That's Y havin a friend (fill or spin the wheel - ie 2 people) is more pleasurable.
