Steering Box question...

Is there a difference between the steering box for a 4x2 and a steering box for a 4x4?

Mine needs to be rebuilt/replaced soon and I was wondering if there's a difference. I heard somewhere that the 4x4 box has a better turning ratio, is this correct?

The boxes are all the same 4x2,4x4, 150,250,350 1980-96, but the pitman arms are different....

Yeah, I replaced my f150's steering box with that from a Bronco2. haha. Same exact box.

If you get one, you can turn them as many times as you want.
No difference in amount you can turn them. that's all in the axle's.
2wd's might turn sharper than 4wd's though.

It's just a worm drive, nothing fancy.

Cool. Is it the same box as the F-Superduty trucks too?

The part numbers are the same on the fordparts.com site. 96 vs 2002.

Thanks for the info guys.

Anyone happen to know the total steering fluid capacity, including the box and pump?

And did these trucks come with a P/S cooler? Mine doesn't seem to have one...

You should have one line (return line) that goes down the eng cross member and bend and twist around and back up that's the cooller

Return line / cooler

I've never seen a spec for total capacity. But I would think two quarts of synthetic ATF would be sufficient.

Thanks Mike and Pete.

You think it would be good to put a bigger cooler on it? Especially with the hydroboost?

Some folks have installed a auxiliary cooler during the conversion.

RRRanch suggests putting a magnetic filter in the mix while doing this as well.

I think its a great idea. Will keep the things from recycling back to the pump.

Our 4x2 took just under two quarts when the box got changed (standard plumbing).

If you add a large cooler, you may need another qt. to top it off.

Thanks for the further info.

Just need to figure out the best place to put the cooler and magnetic filter for it. With the hydroboost there are two return lines, so one cooler would only cool fluid from either the hydroboost unit OR the steering box, but not both...
