I am looking into building a 390 with a longer stroke. I would like to go at least to 4.125. What is the longest stroke I can go to without having to clearance the block? Also, can I use my stock 6.49 rods and get pistons with the right pin height for them? I am building this for a truck so it won't need to rev over 4500. I just want torque and lots of it.
You could run a 4.375" crank and you MIGHT have to grind a bit on the rod shoulders but it's only offered in a forged version I believe. Way overkill for what you want though. The cast Scat 4.25" would be better. The stroker kits use a 6.7" BBC rod and journal and a 1.33" compression height Probe or Diamond piston. I'd check out Survival Motorsports. Their kits come internally balanced and ready to go, no guess work on parts. That's where I got mine from and Barry will do you right. From a google search there's also Coast High performance. I don't have any feedback on them as I don't know of anyone that has purchased a kit from them.
I think the tough part will be finding the pistons. I have heard of folks being able to put similar packages together and then machining off the piston tops to fit. Need to do some serious measuring though.
As for contracting with specific out of state builders, sone have good experiences with it but strangely there are plenty of people here who post how great this stuff is even though they never actually bought it themselves!
Barry's kits are done deal, ready to install, complete balanced assembly. The 445 runs very strong, and bang for the buck champion. He also has a wide selection of hydraulic roller cams, tell him what you have and he'll recommend the right stuff
Update on Survival motorsports 445 stroker kit. I talked to barry yesterday and scat finally got some more cranks made. He is expecting to get them in at his shop some time in the next couple days.
If the pistons were available I would like to buy them and a crank. I have a set of refurbished rods my brother gave me. If I have to, I will buy the kit(I don't think anybody will have to twist my arm).
I will probably buy Survival Motorsports' kit. If it doesn't take any clearancing I will do it myself. I have a block with a fresh bore. I will plastic-gauge all the bearings and make sure It doesn't roll over to hard. I also know someone who works at a machine shop so if I need help I can get it.
