390 - 416 question

I got a 416 stroker kit for a 390 but the rods and pistons are cast. The crank is a Scat 3.980. The numbers on the rods came to be stock 428 rods. And on the on the pistons is .060 . I have no dimensions or anythin on the pistons. I would like to get forged pistons and rods but having a hard time on finding box Forged .060 pistons. Most of the people ive talked to said ill have to get custom ones made for 800 and up. Anyone else use this kit?

If those are stock rods, they're forged. Ford never used cast rods in their pushrod V8's. And the cast pistons are also fine, as long as you don't spray it with NOS. The stock 428CJ's and many other HP Ford's had cast pistons.

Yep you should not have any problems there, and the stock pistons will take an "occational" 100 hp spray.... but with the longer stroke you should have plenty of low end tq. and "if" you did spray it..only use it in the upper rpm's and in high gear! Makes it easier on the motor... JMO

You do know .060 is the end of the line for your block bore wise. If you block needs that then fine. But if you can get away with less of an overbore do it. Save the thickness and overbore for another day. You can sell those pistons and buy the ones you need.

I see a lot of people who don't understand that a block should only be bored out to provide a straight, smooth surface for the rings to seal against. The cubic inches that's gained is minor compared to stroking an engine, and by removing material from the cylinders, the block is weakened.

I wouldn't sink money into a block that had to be taken out that far, but that's just my personal opinion.
