On my 83, f150 4X4 5.8l, I can hear the alternator pulley beginning a whining sound...like the bearings need grease. Can I spray it with lubricant? Also, how am I to figure the belt tension if the alternator and/or pulley need replacement?
Standard Disclaimer: I may not have any idea what I am talking about.
AFAIK, most all bearings are supposed to be packed with bearing grease. Using a spray lubricant will break down the grease and accelerate wear. It may help in the short term, but will do more damage in the long term.
I think you probably want to either repack your bearings (maybe not possible if they are sealed bearings, and even if they're not it would probably take a very troublesome alternator disassembly) or just replace the whole thing with a cheap rebuilt one.

Do not spray the bearing it will make it worse in the long term and could cause damage to the brushes inside.
You can try and spray the belt lightly with lubricant or belt dressing and if the noise goes away then changing the belt or adjusting the tension might help.
as said above if you spray belt dressing (ive also heard a bar of soap wiped on the belt) and the sound goes away its not the alternator or bearing. another thing that it could be is the alternator, i had a 98 blazer that had a whiney alternator, if i dissconected the battery lead off the alternator (not off the battery) the noise would go away
