Hey folks, I am the recent owner of a 2002 Excursion Limited 4x4 V10, it’s got 32,000 original miles and it is in really good shape. It’s got a couple bugs (like anything); the mirrors don’t adjust in all directions (they just move down), the rear AC does no turn off, there is some grinding with the brakes in the back, and a very very slight squealing when I turn the steering wheel either way. The brakes don’t worry me so much because they probably just need pads and resurface the rotors. I managed to get the mirrors where I need them by moving them by hand, so it would be nice to fix that but I can live with it. However I am concerned about the steering and the AC. The noise is mostly just when I start the truck (it is virtually gone when the truck has been running for a while), and I don’t want to prematurely wear out the rear AC. I was hoping one of you folks who have more experience with these vehicles could give me some insight. I have had three mechanics tell me that the steering noise is nothing to worry about, but I guess I am just paranoid because my last car was a lemon. Also If anyone lives around Royal Palm Beach FL, I would like to know if there are any ford dealers you might recommend for service.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Wow, that's low mileage! Congrats on the new Ex.
If both mirrors don't move, then it is more than likely the switch. Mine had that issue too and it's from Florida. I think the switch corroded. I replaced it and they worked fine ever since.
Do you have both the front and rear controls for the rear turned off? Not sure about that issue.
The steering wheel noise is more than likely the rubber seal where the steering column goes through the firewall behind the brake pedal. I got down in the driver's side floor area and rubbed some vaseline all over it and it quieted down. The rubber gets dry and it starts to squeak. Haven't had a problem with it since. It might not be a bad idea to check the front end steering connections and grease them if necessary. My noise was there all the time though, it never went away, so you might have something different going on for it to go away.

-That is probably it, but it is weird becouse the move down, but not any other direction.

-I will definatly check that out, but it sounds like its from the power steering, and when I first got it it was just a hair low on PS fluid, I topped it off, but it still does it in the morning. <o></o>

-At the risk of apearing stupid, I cant figure out which switch controls the AC in the front. I looked in the manual and I only saw instructions for the rear controls. I thought the truck didnt have a front switch for the rear ac.
The main controls for the rear are above your head in the overhead console, the secondary controls for the rear are above the second row of seats. The front will override the back though which is on purpose so the driver always has the final say instead of the kids jumping around in the back lol.
You can pop that panel out of the door, I think the front edge lifts and it comes out. Then you can get at the contacts for the power mirror switch. On my '99 F250 the mirrors were inop but after cleaning the switch they worked perfectly for years until I sold the truck.
The A/C pump runs in every setting on the dash control (assuming you have ***** and not buttons) except for off, floor, and dash vents. All other settings will activate the A/C pump, which effects both the front and rear systems. Obviously you can then adjust the temperature and airflow seperatly.
