EGR Delete or Head gasket problem???

Garage said I need to replace oil egr cooler and oil cooler needs egr coller. I am new to diesel engines. So I don't know what they are really talking about, but I know it is going to cost aloooooott. Which I can't afford. I found a guy I know that works on diesels but not particularly the 6.0L. He thinks its a head gasket. I'm not sure what to do. any advice out there?
I saw a complete kit on mkm customs to do all the problems even head bolts but it is $1200-$1600. Do I really need to do all that?

Welcome to FTE

most of us here run gauges to see the oil cooler condition theres a test you can do to verify
and if the oil cooler is bad on an 06 its recomended to change the egr cooler to and to add a coolant filter will help with oil cooler plugage
alittle trouble shooting may help

I use a scangaugeII its like 160.00 but some havefound sales on them it gets alot of stuff best bang for the buck

but how about some more info like recent work and History
I assume its an 06 you have

what are your drivability concerns
like are you losing coolant or whats up with it

really just need more info to help

06F350mrr : First of all I am not giving advice cause I am not knowledgeable enuff to do so,but I can tell you what I just went thru with my 6.0 F-250. Do not despair,it very well may not be your head gasket, mine was throwing white smoke then went into "Hydrolock" and I had to replace Oil Cooler(Upgrade),EGR Cooler(Upgrade), EGR valve, turbo intake hose, change oil,and replace coolant. Thru a local shop I hired all this for $600 labor plus parts. Which I know the shop made money on parts but the total bill was $2200,if you say it really fast it doesn't hurt as bad.If I had it to do over knowing what I know now, I would have had a thorough flush on the coolant and installed a coolant filter kit(which I am still going to do, as well as install true gauges instead of 'idiot' gauges like oil pressure gauge). If it had been the heads on mine I was planning on doing ARP studs and use OEM gasket set, although I am not sure about the gasket set. But at any rate you have come to the right place for info, there are a LOT of VERY knowledgeable people here(excluding me). I wish you well, and see you around.

Benny, The test for the oil cooler can you tell me where to find the procedure? My brother has 06 we want to check oil cooler before we flush the coolant and install filter kit.

Yes Benny it is 2006 Ford F350. I haven't done any work to it yet. I just bought it like 3 weeks ago and the dealer said everything was good on it. No warranty either. It has 118000 miles on it. the only upgrade I saw was a banks cold air filter. so I have to get it repaired soon because it is my every day work truck. I just needed some advice so I'm not blind when I go to the garage.

Well without some kinda gauges to check the oil cooler you will be going to the shop Blind.

Also Usually with bad Head Gaskets and such you would see ECT temp spikes and may also have coolant puke out the coolant bottle
So is there any white residue around the Coolant bottle cap thats a Tell Tell sign that you have been losing coolant
And if there is some white residue around that coolant cap make shure the coolant leval is not to full. I keep mine under the low mark on the coolant bottle about a 1/2 inch under too full will cause coolant puke.

so Im still alittle lost here as to why it ended up at the shop. What were the drivability concerns/issues that made you take it in to the shop?????????

Leaking coolant and a little oil drip was the problem. White smoke coming out tail pipe, sluggish reponse mostly when you first drive it. After it warms up awhile it runs better.
