I have an interesting problem that I am hoping you guys can help me with. My 99 SD doesn't get used that much anymore, maybe 3-5000 a year. Last year I adjusted the backlash in the steering gearbox which improved my problem for the most part. Now at 230 k the problem is back worse than ever, similar to the death wobble described in other threads. And recently I developed a noise that I was sure was the idler pulley(s). Took the belt off and found that the PS pump was shot.
So now to the root of my question.
Should I replace the gear box at the same time as the PS pump? Pretty sure that it is not tie rods or other suspect areas as most of that has been serviced and the PS Pump and gearbox have never been replaced.
There's no need to replace them both at the same time. Start with the pump and go from there. If the gear box is bad, you can change it next. If the new pump makes things better, stop there.
From what you're describing it sounds like both, but we can always hope for the cheaper fix.
