Hello just thought I'd say hello! I'm new to the forum, an owner of a 1987 Bronco II. I thought I would also start by hitting you guys with a newbie question about PS pump problems...
This is probably pretty common... I have changed my power stearing pump twice already. I had originally changed it because it was leaking all over the place. I knew it was time to top it off when it would start whining and growning. So, the first pump held the fluid but made awful noise as if were low... I've changed it out and still having the same problem. I've tryed bleeding/burping the system: put the truck up on jackstands, turned stearing from right to left with PS pump cap off, adding fluid slowly to let air escape, the whole bit. I've also replaced the high pressure and the return hoses...I've heard that remanufactured pumps have a tendency to be crap and one has to change pumps multiple times before finding a "good one". Is this also the case with BII PS pumps. I'm just woried that my problem may lie else where... gear box maybe?
Any recomendations would be strongly appreciated.

I have a similar issue with my pump being noisy, but I haven't done a whole lot about it. I think the best bet for rebuilt is to get a kit and do it yourself, otherwise, probably a new pump or Explorer pump might be a possible fix (?). I have some minor leaks in my power steering, but it's mostly weeping, not anything really major. I think part of my upcoming drivetrain mod will include an Explorer gearbox and pump, if I can find 'em in decent shape without much cost involved. Just remember that anytime you open the system, you have to bleed it off as with any fluid system. I'm wondering if there is some sort of bypass that can be installed that will allow you to run discharge (hi pressure) to suction (lo pressure) to bleed it off quicker, etc. I'm also wondering if there is a relief valve that could be leaking by or allowing air in on these?
So, has anyone had issues with remanufactured PS pumps? I'm thinkin' I'll pull this second one out, take it back to NAPA and hope they'll exchange it for a new one... I think the warantee is limited 90 day on reman's. We'll see. I've gotten quite good at swaping PS pumps on this thing (takes me ~45 min.) I just hate to wast PS pump fluid. I suppose it's cheap enough that I don't need to be a cheapskate about it if I want to fix my problem. I guess if changing out the PS pump multiple times doesn't fix the problem then I need to start looking somewhere else... what would cause a good PS pump to grown? bad gear box maybe?

My 88 had leaks at the hose ends and a constant groan. Replaced the hoses and
that stopped the leaking. Ran the air out of the system and the groan remained.
Replaced the pump, still no leaks and now the pump only groans during tight turns
for parking. I intend to change the steering box this spring. I once had a 85 that
did not groan or leak, but the belt would squeal and chirp in wet weather during
any turns. No tightening, nor dressing of the belt would change it. I guess it
always has to be something.
1 Inspect Power Steering Pump Leaking or damaged power steering pump reservoir.
2 Inspect Power Steering Hose Leaking, clogged or incorrectly installed power steering hose.
3 Inspect Power Steering Cylinder Loose or worn power steering cylinder.
4 Inspect Power Steering Control Valve Loose, worn, damaged, or faulty power steering control valve
I guess for me, I'm going to start looking at the reservoir and hoses, but I'll probably need to power wash the engine or use degreaser on it. I wouldn't doubt my situation is a combination of the hoses, reservoir and the steering box / control valve.
