Lift Kits

Gentleman,

For the people that have lift kits, I was considering getting one. What are some of the good and bad experiences you all have had with them and is there anything in particular I should look for? I figure just through physics a lift makes gas mileage worse and harder to turn right?

I thought about maybe doing a 6 inch lift, although I want to measure and see about it first. Also is it a good idea to change the wheels and tires out before installing the lift? I have noticed most I see with lifts do not have the stock tires/wheels.

Any information, much appreciated!!
Cheers,

The truck is 2006 F250 Stroker....the top one listed in the caption at the bottom. I mainly use it as a cruiser and daily driver. I will tow a show car very occasionally. Other than that the very occasional hauling, but nothing big. Mainly for cruising around town. I travel quite a bit in it. I take quite a few road trips.

I just put a 6.5 inch lift on mine and iI love it. Only problem is i didnt realize the vibration problem you can get from the carrier bearing. I still havent got mine completely out but its not horribel. It just bugs me. If I did it again I would do more research on that first.

4.5" Donahoe Racing Lift (new coils up front with control arms and misc stuff, 5" block out back with factory leafs)
35x12.5x18 BFG's

6" is the normal lift kit size...but if you only want a bigger truck/tires, a 4" lift, or a leveling kit gets the job done. keep in mind the bigger you go, the more potential issues you'll have. I kicked around the idea of converting mine to a 6" until I did some measuring. I realized I can fit 37" rubber with my 4.5" setup.

oh yeah, rims can have a huge part in this. Especially if you have a 99-04 truck. You'll have less room for big rubber due to the leafs

6" won't really cause any problems. 8" and bigger is where the front driveshaft doesn't fit any more, brake lines have to be extended, etc.

Not really, its just spacers you put on top of the coil springs. They lift the front end of the truck 2.5", but you can also get them in 1.5" or 2".

That sounds like relatively inexpensive procedure I may do that first and see how I like it! How does your ride with the spacers? Is it sitting fairly level?

Yeah they only cost me $70. Some people get an adjustable track bar to re-center the axle afterwards but it doesn't bother me (the axle gets pulled about a half inch to the driver's side but you can't tell unless you are looking for it).

As far as the ride, it is identical to stock. And it does sit a half inch higher in the front now, so if you want it level get the 2" spacers instead of the 2.5".

Did you install them yourself? Is it a DIY type of thing?

Yeah its pretty easy. You might need to rent a coil spring compressor from your local auto parts store. Other than that just follow the directions that come with it.
