Not surprising at all. I've read numerous times that Ford has brought on too much techno stuff too fast and I have to agree. I am not impressed with the Sync in my truck at all.
The new Passat is one of the blandest looking cars on the road today. Boring styling for the ultra conservative.
The Elantra is an excellent choice IMHO though I like the Sonata better.
Good point Tim...Ford is not the only guilty party in the techno issue. The new Toyota ENTUNE is very complicated. Many older folks are intimidated by the technology. Another one that comes to mind is BMWs I Drive.
While I put ZERO stock in awards when purchasing a new vehicle, I think they do have a point on the transmission issue. Ford and Honda seem to have problems with new automatic transmission designs. The VW DSG has been surprisingly good where Ford's implementation has had problems. Since 90+% of US buyers get automatics it can be a deal-breaker.

What new Fords have transmission problems. I have not had a Ford transmission problem since 77. I have driven some Ford automatic transmissions up to 200,000 miles without a single problem. I do change my ATF every 25 to 30,000 miles though. I have always replaced with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF except for the F350 which I use Motorcraft SP.
Not saying they haven't had problems, I just think most of it is a lack of maintenance.
The article was centering around the "Ford PowerShift dual-clutch automatic, the computer-shifted manual transmission that Ford passes off as an automatic in the Focus."
Ford uses a cheaper dry clutch system vs the wet clutch German design. Also, Ford has had electrical/computer glitches. Changing fluid is not going to do anything to prevent problems with these brand new cars.
I mentioned Honda because of the problematic CVT we had in the Civic GX and other recent problems with Accord and minivan conventional transaxles.
Going back a few years, I had the craptastic E4OD, again with problems unrelated to lubrication.
