I never had one fail. But I had an e99 unlike your 2001 and it helped big time on mid range power and mpg at highway speeds. I read on here that other also felt much more power at highway speeds when going to pass and all. I am talking about my T500 from Clay@ riffraff diesel made by Joey@ terminator. Are you have some kind of problem if so it would be better to just state your problem.
Chet
Will try to explain what it has been doing, slowly started0 to loose power and fue economy went down, down by about 3 miles per gallon over 12 tankfulls, truck was sounding quit when running at speed on highway and nowhere near normal amount of power (kick out of OD when climbing mild hills etc) always change oil faithfully before 6000 kilometers (3600 miles) have used Rotella in it for ever. Has 270000k (162000miles) no codes at all, had buzz test performed and buzz sounded good but #8 came up on contribution and my glow pluggs just didnt seem to be cutting it so had valve gaskets changed. Picked truck up and glow pluggs worked great and thing ran like almost new again power back and sounded normal. Ran like this for approx. 20 miles. start up next morning and glow plugs worked great and stated fine when truck went to high idle heard a pop and ran rough cut rpm by bout 200 rmp, wouldnt hold a steady rpm. as it warmed up it smoothed out. drove it and was fine pulled good and all smooth, after work drivin home power cut down again and sounded quiet and at jsut off idle accelerating it cuts in and pulls hard and sounds normal but only does this for second or so at a time. So this is what I have done since it stated doin this. New CPS, rebuilt fuel bowl and installed fuel rail by pass, changed oil in Hpop (it was like tar) disconnect EVBP and no change, disconnect oil pressure sensor -definate change, and now when it starts it blows a medium volume of white smoke till it warms up.
and forgot to mention that also ohm the new connectors to see if one failed or came loose in side and all injectors read good right around 3.9 each one. really stumped here and both mechanics in town just give me the deer in the headlights look!!!
Before the pop did it sound like wind going through your exhaust? If so I have the same problem and it has something to do with EBPV. It will say in high idle just the EBPV closes fast about a min after start.
well if I gotta go under them covers again Ill get an injector from Riffraff for #8 and do it at the same time, sure hope I find something under there this is holding me back from heading north for work
dont know for sure what your looking for, but when this slobber-knocker fires up cold it will hit high idle after about 2-3 minutes of running then the you start to hear a banshee wailing through the exhaust pipe for approx. 3-4 minutes then it she stoppes wailling but the truck will remain in high idle for extended periods of time I have seen it sit in high idle for 10-15 min on many occasions. when I heard the pop I was standing infront of the truck so dont know what tune the exhaust was "playing" now when it stops wailing is usually when the white smoke stops,
The high idle is a normal procedure for the PCM when it's cold out. The noise out the exhaust is from the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve (EBPV) closing. The EBPV is a butterfly in the exhaust that closes at idle when the engine is cold to help aid in warmup of the engine. It should open right back up when the brake is pressed.

Are you getting a contribution fault for #8? If you are running a grey CPS, that is completely normal.

I know what the EBPV is but what would cause it the shut off about a min after it just turned on? that is my problem. Im thinking some type of sensor but dont know what one it would be.
been getting contribution #8 from 2 grey and one black cps, I just dont want to get in there again and not change it. One thing I did notice this afternoon is a new knock around rear drivers side doesnt sound too nice, scheduled to get under the covers on thurs morning.
The grey CPS is known for throwing a code for #8 contribution. I would re-torque everything under the valve covers and see where things are at from there.
When it shuts off, can you restart it? How long has this been going on?
