My '54 is still running the stock 6 volt pos ground electrical. For some reason, when I turn the ignition switch off, both the temp and fuel gauges bury the needle all the way to the right, and the oil and batt indicator lights in the dash stay on. This is even after the key is out. Anyone have an idea what the culprit is?
Not knowing what the gauge orientation is on a 54, "bury the needle all the way to the right" means nothing to me. But if you have dash warning lights on after the ignition switch is turned off, it sounds like you have a faulty or defective switch.
I agree with Wayne. Check for current at the acc post of the ignition switch with the key off. There should be no current. If there is, the switch isn't doing its job.
The Oil and Bat lights being on would mean Ignition power is still on or is getting cross-fed. Do you have a 3-wire alternator conversion by any chance?
I am still running factory 6v pos ground, with generator. No alternator conversion.
Thanks I'll check the switch. It is strange, fuel gauge reads "1/4 full", temp reads "cold" with the ignition on. Turn ignition off, and fuel gauge jumps all the way right past "full" and temp jumps all the way right past "hot" then battery and oil light stay on. I've read that on some other trucks (57 and up I think), this may happen when a dash constant voltage reducer goes bad. But, as far as I can tell, the 54 doesnt have this.
If you disconnect the battery, what do the gauges do? In the older trucks, it's normal for the gauges to go to those extremes with the ignition off. Is your gas tank 1/4 full? You are correct in that you do not have a CVR unit for your gauges.
The sending unit for my tank is bad, so the gauge reading is not accurate to begin with. If I disconnect the battery, the gauges all return to the furthest left (low water temp, low fuel). I dont know if its normal or not for the gauges to do go to those extremes, but the "batt" and "oil" temp indicator lights also come on when the ignition is turned off and that definitely cannot be normal.
