2000 Ranger upper ball joint replacement?
I have a 2000 Ranger 2x4 that needs ball joints, and I need opinions on how to proceed.
Apparently, the uppers can either be replaced by pressing in a new one, or by replacing the complete upper control arm.
I could really use some information about the pros and cons of reusing the upper control arm.
And, will reusing the control arm require the use of a 50 ton press?
Thanks for any help or information.
I had read that thread earlier, and although informative, it is lacking information on whether replacing the upper ball joint without replacing the UCA is a good idea.
What I'm wondering is if anyone has ever had an upper ball joint that was pressed into an old UCA come out. The practice of reusing a control arm without any way of retaining the ball joint is new to me. I guess that I'm a little skeptical about the control arms ability to secure a new ball joint into a hole that had the same sized part removed. It would seem that the hole would be left somewhat enlarged from having been used.
This is not like replacing a wheel bearing where the part that was previously expanded(the bearing) is being replaced, if you know what I mean.
Thanks for the help, but I think I just convinced myself that buying a new control arm is the correct way to proceed.
