It does sound like really scored with that 850. Those are highly sought after, and rare. Enjoy.
You sound well versed with QJ's, but just in case, if you need any parts, hp stuff, float, acc.pump, pwr.piston springs, jets, rods, you name it, do a search for Cliff Ruggles. He has a QJ business/shop and sells everything.
The difference between an Edelbrock and a hp QJ just makes me crack up.
Funny you'd mention. I bought his book, and the rebuild kit for my 850 from him. His kits are expensive but they are more than willing to offer any kind've help over the phone. I honestly would have had him rebuild it but he said I'd be waiting roughly 8 months to get it back because he's got that long of a work list.
The Q-jets really are great carbs, for street use anyways. They can even be built for some hardcore track performance, my friends a circle tracker and because of regulations he had to run a stock carburetor, i don't know how but all i know is this carb was pushed out to 1050 CFM, and made this 406 producing alittle over 600 horses at the fly really scream. It was really cool, that's what got me into these carbs to begin with.
Picked up Another holley 600 CFM today, 25$ whole carb, needs rebuilt. It's an 1850 - 4, exact same as my other one. For now i'm just going to use one of my holleys, i'll toy with the idea of using a QJ later on.
That was certainly a bargain. What ever works for you is good. I just spoke with a buddy here on the forum who uses a 600 Holley. He likes it, but says throttle response below 2k rpm is poor. Hope it works for ya.
Yeah i kind've expected that, i might switch to a Qjet later on because of that. My truck is geared high. I think it originally had a 3 speed and somebody swapped the trans for a 4 speed, and left the rear gears the same. my truck does 15mph in first at 2300-2400 RPM.
On the flip side, i know a guy with the exact same truck as me and his first is so low that he starts out in second.
