Okay, I've had my F250 for two days now and hooked up a trailer tonight preparing for a trip to The Michigan UP this weekend. When I go into the message center under Truck Apps, it says no trailer is connected. I tried to setup a new trailer thinking I needed to set one up first to get this to work, but but struggled doing so- I created a new trailer but can't select it. I know I am making a rookie mistake but can't figure it out.
The trailer is hooked up and the light work, although not the brakes. Is the problem with the brakes, me setting up the trailer or what? The Owners Guide is not help in this.
It's likely not you. You don't have to set up and store a trailer for the system to work. It does require like others have said that you have a trailer with brakes, or, a functional 7-pin connection. The 4-pin connection does not work with the tow command system.
So, you have a trailer with a 7-pin connector and electric brakes and have no brakes? Check all truck fuses, and read through the tech folder for possible TSB or other info. There are times when this system does not work and has to be replaced or re programmed.
Would not hurt to hook up to your trailer with another vehicle to make sure the prob is not with your trailer.
Personally I have never had a problem with the system unless the trailer I hook upto has a wiring problem, almost always associated with a bad bulb, ground, or frayed wire somewhere making another ground. The system actually has helped me re wire a coupl trailers because it told me of a fault so I went and found it.
Okay, I think I got it now, thanks again to all. I really don't know what I would do without this forum and the help you all provide. This is a buddies Sled trailer and it turns out his brakes don't work, so that is the issue. The brakes work on my sled trailer so I will do a test with my trailer later today, but I'm sure that's the issue.
I have found with either of my trailers (both have brakes) the message center will frequently say trailer not connected. Never really paid attention to it as the message always go away.
Porthole. The trailers I pull all have a very big harness, and rather stiff. I have to put a small bungy around trailer connector and hook it to the truck bracket that holds truck receptacle. And I don't get the disconnected anymore.
