Good to know.........

This is one of those "Good to know" pieces of info. At least it is for me and I thought it was worth sharing.

Ford has many dtc's that can not be pulled with the tunner. Have had mini maxx say no codes and pulled a long list of codes using the ford IDS. Reprogramming also leaves a string of "U" codes that are module to module comunication codes that can not be pulled with the mini maxx. Any time DTC's are cleared a P1000 will be there immediatly even if the H&S product isn't pulling it and remain there untill the PCM has ran long enough to clear it.

U0073 Control Module Communication Bus A Off
U0101 Lost Communication With Transmission Control Module (TCM)
U0121 Lost Communication With The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module
U0137 Lost Communication With Trailer Brake Control (TBC) Module
U0151 Lost Communication With Restraints Control Module (RCM)
U0155 Lost Communication With Instrument Panel Cluster (IC) Control Module

These codes in general are ignored for general diagnotics unless it seems relevent to concern present. Multiple U codes generally happen when programing the PCM because it looses communication with the other modules during programing. But other things can cause these codes like low voltage where non essential modules shut down in low voltage conditions. Or high voltage where modules will shut down to protect it in high voltage situations. So a dead battery or a jump start could set U codes but would also be ignored if you are also seeing low or high voltage codes. Now if you are seeing only U codes with no other codes that would logically cause a U code then you start suspecting something else like a module reprogram from the likes of a the programmers that we are running.

Many codes are proprietory to ford software, meaning that only ford software can see these codes. Also the ford software can pull codes from specific modules not just the PCM and TCM like the H&S products. What it comes down to is unless you are going to put a vehicle back to stock and run it a 100+ miles, a dealer can tell if they look hard enough.

Pretty reliable info from a Ford employee.

AutoEnginuity can read some of the codes that IDS sees. Like RM2738 says, normal code scanners don't see anything beyond the PCM/TCM. Each of the ECU's throughout the truck has its own codes.

Along similar lines, when I used my AutoEnginuity to log about 15 PID's for about a month continuously, the more I ran it, the more of these U-codes appeared when I pulled them.

I asked AutoEnginuity about it and they replied Ford seems to have low thresholds for what it deems to be an error. Also, when talking to other ECU's with the scanner, some of them are put into diagnostics modes and therefore stop communicating and get logged as errors. I have a feeling the AutoEnginuity is maybe also corrupting something on the CAN bus(es) when initializing itself or reading stuff in diagnostics mode

When I pulled the codes 3 months after I stopped logging, all of these codes were gone, so I'm not sure when they cleared themselves

I logged for a short while again just recently, and I pulled the codes out of curiosity. The latest complaints are some communication fault in the audio unit and a failure in my 4x4 unit.

No CEL's, and my Scangauge says no codes or pending codes either.

Bottom line is, if something is messing with an ECU over the CAN bus, I'm sure something will invariably complain about it.
