Stolen Tailgate
#48
Just seems like law enforcement could do something.
Why are they stolen?
For the money, of course.

And who buys them?
Junkyards(?) and who else?

Looks like there should be a way to remove the "profit" (ill-gotten gain) from this vicious cycle. I mean other than having to catch the thief redhanded. Probably that part having a serial number might be a good start - and anyone caught in posession of one with it having had the S/N removed (kinda like handguns) would be breaking the law. Might need to have provisions for older ones w/o serial numbers but eventually you could stop the profitability in tailgate thiefs. Looks like that's a 'big ticket' item so it'd be worth tracking S/Ns.
.
I know IF I ever caught anyone trying to steal mine, they'd be looking down the barrel of a .45+P. (And I'd need very little excuse to say I felt like my life was being threatened by his aggressive move towards me with that screwdriver in his hand....and yes, there'd be a screwdriver on the scene with his fingerprints ALL over it).
For the money, of course.

I know the thread is a little old but I just had my tailgate and tail lights stolen. I had done a retrofit to have the step tailgate and 2008 and up tail lights (purchased from a bed take-off for a flat bed). Worst part is I actually was afraid of this happening because I had a set of tail lights stolen out of a Chevy a few years back so I replaced the stock bolts with tamper proof torx bolts. These guys took the gate and lights while the truck was sitting outside a movie theater. Security camera didn't show enough detail to even get close and the cops here in Dallas basically told me that its nearly impossible to find it.
