Evaporator Core Disconnect????

Hello,

I have a 1999 Ford 150 4x4 5.4L. I have the who dash out. I am in the process of replacing the A/C evaporator core which is now accessible. I got the weird clamps off the two hoses in the engine compartment, but how the hell do I get those rings locking the hoses to the evaporator core off??????

Any auto parts store should have the tool to do it. Just ask for a fuel line or A/C disconnect tool

It will look like this:

I think the nylon spring clamp tools will work better in that application as there is very little room where the lines connect up by the fire wall there inexpensive and can be had at most any autoparts store for 10-15 bucks at the most, they do both fuel and a/c lines.

Dude, you have no business servicing an AC component when you don't know what you are doing. There are certain things you can service yourself and certain things you can't. It is obvious from your post that you don't know what you are doing and have not read up on how to service an AC system. So stop right now, take it to a qualified mechanic, and let them finish this up before you hurt yourself or do serious damage to your AC system.

The only reason why you'd ever replace an evaporator core is if it was leaking, so that means all the refrigerant charge is gone. There would already be air in the system, so there is nothing more he can do to damage the system, and I don't see any possible way he could hurt himself.

If it was full of refrigerant, that would be a different story, but then why would you be replacing the evaporator if it was?

I would however recommend you get the system vacuumed down and charged up by a qualified mechanic. The vacuum is very important to ensure maximum performance and longevity.

Also replace the Accumulator. Very important to do that now that the system will be open on a 13yr old truck

Hey Danspeed, how did you actually get the evaporator core back in the truck?! I'm in the middle of replacing mine, and I can't get it back in to save my life. Had to cut it to get it out, but it's almost as if the bottom of the plenum needs to be removed so that it can be aligned properly, then put back on, but that seems absurd. There has to be a trick, and I just can't seem to figure it out.

Thanks anyone for their help.

Got it back in months ago... this is an old thread. I had to take the WHOLE DASH OUT to get the new one in. Took me about 3 days, but after doing it once i could probably get it done again in about 10-12 hours if I had to.

Good luck

I know it's quite an old thread. Found it looking for answers to this. Did you take the entire plenum box out? That's the only way I think I can make it work, however, I can't find all the spots that the plenum is connected. I've found 4 (2 in the firewall in the engine bay), one above the motor, and one on a brace near the gas pedal. Any recollection of what else you did?

Thanks for responding, too.

LatchLoua, your pic or link just came up as question marks. That said, I don't think tools are what I need. I'm looking for the locations of where the plenum is attached to the firewall and frame. I already have the lines disconnected.

I am not sure that I understand your question. nothing except the clips on the evaporator core needed to be removed on the firewall side. once you remove the entire dash from the vehicle, the black box for the evaporator and heater core will be accessible. once the heater core / evaporator core box is accessible, you will notice there is a cover to cover on top of the box being held down by about 12 screws. you will notice once you remove the cover that the evaporator core is now easily accessible

you should be able to remove the core at this time without any problem. make sure you replace the blend door with an updated version whether it needs it or not or at some point you will be going back in to do this job over again. Good luck

Here's what I'm saying. I'm here. That's the new evap core. I can't, for the life of me, get that thing to line up correctly to get it back in. I couldn't even get the old one out without cutting it. So I suppose there's a trick to getting it back in?
