Speedometer Odometer trans shift issue

Thanks in advance for any help.

I thought I might get a little more input in this section.

In another thread I mentioned that I took my dash apart to replace all of the bulbs and I still don't have the wait to start light. I'm working on it.

Now I have another issue that is most likely related in some way. When I put the connectors all back in place before bolting the dash back in, I checked to see that all of the lamps worked. The ones that were supposed to light were lit (except for the ones in the diesel panel to the right of the main panel and also the airbag light (that's another story)). I'm sure that the odometer was working at that point. After I bolted it all back in, the odometer is not working and when I drive the truck the speedometer isn't working and the trans. won't shift out of low. Crap! This thing only has 142k on it, I don't want to lose that!

In the interest of full disclosure, I didn't disconnect the batteries while doing the work and at a couple of points in the removal and install I had to turn the key switch on to move the shifter down into low. I know, not too smart. Too late now.

From researching the issue on this site and others, It seems like the problem could be related to the VSS in the rear and/or the speedometer/odometer module in the dash (seems more likely to me). I guess it could also be in the wiring or connectors. Although, I tore the dash back apart to check those things and didn't see anything obvious.

Any thoughts on what the problem is? What other info. can I give you guys to help me troubleshoot this?

I am assuming this is a 99-up model? Have you tried disconnecting the batteries for a minute and then re-connecting them? Talk to the dealer and see how much they would charge to put their communication scan tool on it to talk to the speedo module.

OOP'S. I guess some basic info would have helped. My other post was in the 94-97 Powerstroke section so it was a given.

'96 f-250 crew cab single wheels w/ 7.3l diesel and automatic. All stock w/142k mi.

The truck was running fine before taking the dash apart in order to replace the 21 BULBS. Although I did just replace the batteries due to one being bad and the other weak on load test. In fact, the truck still starts and runs fine except that it won't shift out of first gear. At least it doesn't at anywhere near the normal shift RPM. I didn't try to go too high on the RPM's, just a little above normal. Maybe 2,500?

Current issues:

  • No "wait to start" light. It was working 6 mos. ago but the truck was parked for about 6 mos. (I only use it to tow my race car trailer and we sat this year out)
  • I'm not sure the other diesel related lights in that panel are working either. Water in fuel, Fuel filter and 1 more that I can't recall. 4 total
  • Speedo no worky
  • Odometer/trip not showing in display area. It was working when I first reconnected the harnesses at the back of the dash but was not working once I got it all screwed back together.
  • Trans. doesn't shift out of low.
Thanks again for any helpful input.

Karl

I took it all back apart. Didn't find anything obvious until I checked the fuse again. It was blown.

It seems back to normal now.

Thanks for the input, Karl
