I can't say that I take "change" any better than the next guy, but the schedule and logistics have to change. Obviously can't keep going the way you are going. Look at the aftermarket AFE type filters, work a corporate deal, agree to product development or something, and/or fab up a pre-filter.

In terms of engine performance, the Donaldson was overkill for the power stroke. Very expensive and needlessly big. JUST MY OPINION THOUGH!!!!!!!
and those donaldson filters, while nice, were a real B!tch to change out. I mean a real knuckle buster.
Yes they were on the 6.0; but on the 6.4 they are very easy to change. BTW, I had to change mine on my 6.4 at 65K miles because the filter minder was pulling in at full throttle. Cost me +$80 at my Ford dealership parts counter.

Thanks for pointing it out , getting a little older now and I over look stuff like that. I must have looked at my post 5 times thinking "did I post it in all capital letters?" I learned something new today
When talking with Donaldson over the last few weeks I have learned there may be enough room in the stock box to make special powercore filter fit. I would have to pay up front for all the R&D so its an option. I was then thinking about doing foam prefilter? I may try it on a few trucks and see if it works. Thinking of just a 3'' piece of 80 micron foam it would at least add to the dirt holding capacity and maybe stretch the filter changes out a little longer.
Well first of all it's maintenance and not a repair, because there has been no mechanical failure.
Secondly I'm not sure if I would agree with Matt about it being a step back. Sure it doesn't last as long as the Donaldson units would, but the cost is FAR less. Many have told me that the Donaldson filter in the past model trucks lasted around 100,000 miles or so. If this one lasts 30,000 miles on average you're looking at replacing this $21 filter(MSRP) three times for every time you would replace a $100 once. That's nearly a $40 savings if you pay MSRP(which you shouldn't!). That's a huge operating cost reduction which would, IMHO make it a step forward!
I've driven fleet trucks before and I agree that changing filters is generally not considered operator-level maintenance. For those that I used to work for a driver's job was to drive and not work on the truck, and therefore maintenance functions cost an arm and a leg. To avoid downtime why not change the air filters when you do the oil change? It only costs you $6.18 for the part, right? I'm fairly confident you wouldn't lose an additional hour of shop time during the operation, so you'd save $194 by having this done every oil change.

Thats an idea I have thought of but it would double our filter changes every year is the big issue. Also CA considers them haz mat for large operating fleets and we have to pay for each one to be junked. Just for the 6.7 during 2012 I am looking at 6 oil changes per truck x 97 trucks = 582 oil changes
if I could find a way to not replace the filter each oil change thats a $3500.00 savings per year. I get charged by the crate to pick up air filters and it runs $1500.00 per bin which holds about 300lbs of misc filters. All in all I think we have 215 or so trucks with only a few left being 6.4's. The new ones coming in are either 6.2 gas (non pto trucks all F250's) or 6.7 (F550 all with PTO's) . I think ford is going to keep the 6.7 long term which is good but this filter issue is a long term headache.

Still seems to be your best bet though. So if you figure the $5.00 cost for disposal, which is absolutely ludicrous, you're still looking at less than $15 per filter change, which is a pittance compared to the costs you mentioned earlier in this thread. If that won't work why not every other oil change?
So, as an aside here, if you figured out a way to install a HEPA certified filter on these trucks then could you make a case with the state suing them for the cost of hazmat removal since you are filtering the airspace for them making it cleaner for the public benefit?
I have the stock filter box in my garage and I know that you could get a pre filter made/fabbed to fit on there. I'm sure you know this, but make darn sure it is fastened good. These engines are one powerful shop vac and I would hate to see your pre filter get sucked into the turbo!
