Here's another chance for me to be wow'd by the massive biceps of knowledge from everyone! I'm curious to know if there are any major differences between a F150 frame and an F250 frame. Both regular cab.
Some more in depth info/questions...
I know the 250's have leaf's in the front, so I'm thinking cheaper and easier suspension lift/beef-up?
Are the frames any stronger or weaker than the other?
Would the cab mounts be the same on the 250 as the 150?
Would motor mounts be the same?
I have a F150 Ranger currently, and I'm curious if its worth it to track down a F250 frame and switch it out, or if there will be a lot more fabrication involved in changing over allll my parts? The big one being the cab is in MINT condition and I don't want it to go to waste!
I'd be curious as to any differences myself. I am thinking of tracking down a 73-75 F250/F350 and swapping the body onto my 78 F150 frame. Should it be a direct swap?
Question
#1- no idea myself
#2- unsure. I found a website at one time with the strength specs, I'll have to track down for you. IIRC the frames on the F250 4x4 reg cab (Hi boys) from 67 -77.5 was the strongest of the the frames produced until the late 90's (But don't quote me, I'll dig up the article.
#3- depends on 2wd or 4wd. 4wd uses the same front mounts but the rear's are different. Mounts are on the outside of the frame on the 4wd, on the inside on the 2wd.
#4- depends on the motor not the frame.
Hope it helps! I get so much from others, I just try to pass it along
Well I'm looking at picking up a "parts truck". Its a 1974 F250 Regular Cab "Custom" 4x4, manual trans, 360 motor. I have a 1979 F150 Ranger Regular Cab, 4x4, C6 Auto trans, 390 motor.... The main thing though, is my cab is in MINT shape, so I wanted to swap it onto the beefier frame... and i much rather drive a manual that an auto...

The cabs will swap, the front cab mounts are the same. You'll have to redrill the holes for the rear mounts to work, never done it myself but supposedly the floor is already marked where the holes need to be drilled.
Drilling the new holes is the easy part. Just make sure you fenders are aligned somewhat or do some measurements to align cab before you drill new holes.
Just went out to look at the two I have out back. The '79 f250 4x4 and the '77 F100 2wd cabs are identical in the way they mount. Both front mounts are outboard of the frame rails and both rears mount to a brace running between the frame rails. looks like a direct swap.
In all honesty, you can mount just about anything to anything if you got the time, tools,........and MONEY!

The '79 F250 will be the same, that would be a direct swap. It was only the 73-77 1/2 F250 4WD (highboys) that had the narrower frame (F350's had them too). F250 2WD had the wider frames.
I did the swap, it was easy. mount the cab, put the front clip on, and align everything as good as you can. Then crawl underneath and drill up through the rear cab mounts into the cab. I used a 12" long 1/4" drill bit ($8) Go inside the cab and drill down through the floor with a hole saw the same diameter as the rubber plugs. Keep the plugs out of the old cab and then install them in the new one. The only tell will be the four hole plugs!

I see...what about the '79 F350 Cab & Chassis frames? Any info on them?
Here's why....I just bought this '79 F350 dump truck and I was looking at making it 4wd by puting a D60 that I got laying around.
I've got 435s and 205s from 2 donor trucks to use for the front drive but it looks like there would be a lot of fab work to get it under there.
The other issue is the D60 is a king pin but later like 85 or so with the really short tube on the driver side. Looks like I'm gonna have to cut it apart and change the tubes to make it work.
I've looked high and low for a bare 78-79 D60 front housing but the damm things are scarce.
On edit: I don't want to derail the OP's thread so I will start one on this subject a bit later....thanks
