Sounds stupid I know but how do I know if my 1946 inline six is classed as big or small block ??

Hi Andy, your question doesn't sound stupid. The term small or big block doesn't apply to these engines. That term is used, generally, on the V8 engines beginning in the '60s muscle car era. In '46 Ford had just one 6 cylinder, the 226 G series.
