OK, everyone... Happy New Year.
I made a couple of resolutions that I plan on keeping this year, and I'm putting myself out there for the sake of accountability. Who else is willing to make their promises public?
I have no idea how this thread should work, other than I plan on posting my own results and will certainly encourage anyone else who posts theirs, as well. I posted my resolutions in another thread, but here they are again:
1) Lose about 30 pounds this year.
2) Make myself a more attractive hire to any potential employer.
3) Get at least one of my big bills paid off.
I'm also blogging my results. So jump onboard and let's push each other to self improvement nirvana!
Okay, so the first day of losing weight is successful. I actually ended the day about 200 calories short of my goal (or my limit, I suppose). Historically, the first 10 or so pounds is pretty easy to come off, I don't even have to do much exercise. I won't weigh myself more than a couple of times per week, usually Monday morning and Friday morning (this allows me to see how much damage I did over the weekend, when it's a little harder to eat right).
As for my other endeavors, I'm currently reading the book 'What Color is Your Parachute?' in order to move in the right direction for future employment. As a disclaimer, I have to say that while I am grateful to have my job, I simply do not see myself doing this for the next 20 or so years, even though customer service is gratifying most of the time.
I dumped 30 pounds last year - but how I did it is kind of dirty so suffice it that I drink a lot less.
I am actively seeking a tobacco (IE: NICOTINE) substitute so I smoke even less. Light cigs have ventilated/carberated filters that don't reduce nic at all. You still smoke the same amount of tobacco so something else is necessary to break the chain of addiction -
Removal of the actual nicotine.
I will finish my V8 Ranger project
I will get to Carlysle Pa. this year or the next with the above mentioned project toy...
(not to mention Gatlinburg)

Ahh, I think you've hit the nail right on the head! I hope you are able to do it! Cold Turkey was brutal for me, but it was the thing that finally worked. Since I was a drinker at the time, and I was in Antalya, Turkey, I knew that drinking on liberty also meant a cigarette. Therefore, I told my buddy to deny me a smoke, no matter how much I begged. He complied, and I was pretty mad at him, but after that first night with no cigs and a lot of booze, I was able to stop quit cigs.

Would you care to expound on that? I know you've talked about your Ranger often, and I wish you luck with it (and hope you continue to post the occassional pic).
As for my own resolutions, I got my wife to commit to 2 things: She is going to join me in the battle of the bulge (She'd probably kill me if she read this), and she has promised to learn to write calligraphy. Eating a proper amount of calories is actually pretty tough after having the holiday feasts and all the goodies over the last couple of months. My brain is telling my stomach that it wants food, even though I have eaten plenty. I quit sweets altogether, so that craving should only last a couple more days.
Well, week one only saw a 2 pound loss for me. I usually lose a little moe than that at first. Too bad. The up side is that my wife said she also lost 2 lbs, for which she was thrilled, and so was I (like it or not, guys tend to lose the pounds easier than gals- at least in the beginning). Also, I tend to get full quicker than I did only a week or so ago. Eating better has multiple advantages, I guess.
