The other bracket I mean is the bracket that has a single bolt with a 15 mm hex head that is bolted to the step, then it comes up and away from the frame....there are two bolts that bolt to an underbrace of your bed...toward the cab side. You will need two additional u-clip nuts and bolts to bolt that to the bed as well. It gives the step more rigidity by putting some force in the opposite direction.
Thanks for the info and sorry for the late reply, was out playing with the Mustang this weekend.
It is very hard to see the bracket in the picture, if you (or anyone) can take a pic installed that would be great!, thanks again
Since it's 5 below zero outside I went ahead and borrowed a pic from the comfort of the living room
I circled the extra bracket that appears to be missing on your steps in red
Thanks a ton for the help. I guess they left them on the truck when they pulled these. Just to make sure I'm thinking this correct I attached two pictures of the step from the inside and outside. I am guessing the bracket uses the that main bolt that holds the steps together?
As heavy as these are you would think this is not needed. I will have to find out the part numbers and get a set anyway.
Great, I know it's cold but sometime in the next few days if you can shoot another pic just a little wider I would not complain I am still waiting on the frame bolts and will have more time hunting down those brackets. My dealer has no trucks in stock with the steps to see.
Got the steps mounted up, they seem to work fine without the bracket. I did however order the bracket for one side just to see if there is a difference. It took a while to find the correct part number for them but found some guys at internet Ford stores to spend time and help me out.
The bracket lists for for $40 DS and $50 PS side but Tousley had them for $27 and $35. If it turns out they just make it easier to push in then I will leave the passenger side off. If they are there to stop the steps from somehow bending I will get the other side. The steps seem very solid as it is with just the four frame bolts but I will post up more when this arrives.
The seller could not find the bolts and my dealer could not look them up for some reason? I called Dave at TrueBlueRacingParts in PA, very nice guy, he called engineering and came up with the numbers for them. Eight W506433S439 and Eight W707369S439 . I am not sure of what you mean by outer bracket?
Any hints you can pass on so it takes me 15 minutes per side?
I also got my set of steps second hand off of craigslist for a steal, but it also didn't come with bolts or a bracket. Would the above numbers ( Eight W506433S439 and Eight W707369S439) be the part numbers through Ford? And I would assume that you would need 4 of each bolt? Did you have to purchase anything else to install? I can't believe somebody can't make a kit for this. Thanks Kevin

Yes those number are for eight bolts and eight nuts, four on each side. The bracket was used on early builds and discontinued at some point. The Parts guy at Tousley called Ford and that is what he was told.
So just get the nuts and bolts using those numbers and you will be fine. They mount right up and I have had mine working great for over a year now.

Thanks for the info guys. I purchased a set of these steps and a bull bar on craigslist for only $200. So glad it wasn't a waste of cash and I can use them.
Those were not the correct ones that I needed. Went into the dealership today and looked at the assembly print out and the mounting bolts that I needed were # w707369s439 for the nut/spring @ $5.31 a pop and # w711311s439 for the bolt @ $4 a pop. If they look it up on their computer it's something like HX1 and HB2. Grand total for a set of 8 nuts and bolts....$78.64. More then I wanted to spend, but it's what I needed.
Yeah, I agree with most that this is a rare option - I have a few friends with 09+ F-150s, and all of them have 6.5' bed, but no side steps or tailgate steps.
I'm in a rental truck right now (2012 XLT) and no tailgate step - getting 200lb logs out of the bed wasn't as easy as my truck! The tailgate step for sure is a great aid.
I love all the steps - Ford did right by me when they made the bed so much easier to use than the competition!
I also want to point out to those putting bedside steps on after the fact - get the clear plastic paint protector for the area right above each step, to protect your paint! If you look at a factory-ordered bedside step truck, it's got a clear protector that I didn't see in ssjrsw's photo.
