I am going to ask what might seem like a stupid question here. I haven't tried this mod with my trucks but was thinking of doing it. I have done it on my motorcycle though. The difference is that with the motorcycle I ran the hose to the back of the bike and put a one way valve on it. It used to vent back into the intake. Putting a one way valve on it gained 2 horse power. And it eliminated some of the leaky base gasket problems. So the question is, would there be any benefit to doing something similar to a truck?
Bob.
Was your bike a V-twin?
The reason the check valve works so well on v-twin motorcycles is because during part of the cranks rotation both pistons are traveling down the cylinders pushing the crank case vapors out. As the pistons both travel up the cylinders the check valve closes and the pistons actually draw a vacuum on the crank case. The check valve holds that vacuum causing a greater pressure differential between the top and bottom of the piston. That helps produce the extra power you got.
On a V8 or even a 4 cyl the pistons are moving in opposite directions so the crankcase pressure stays fairly constant, no pushing or pulling.

Yes it was an older Harley. That explains it. Thanks.
I don't have to worry about inspections here so I can do a basic mod on the trucks.
SpringerPop, I finally got a call back from the Smog Referee today. I had stopped by to visit with him about the Racor CCV. He was 99.9% sure that it was allowed and did not need any OK from CARB because the CCV system remained closed.
But just to be sure, he forwarded the info and a web link containing photos of the Racor CCV3550-02FRD on to the folks that call the shots. They gave it a thumbs up. It falls under the definition of "Oil Separators & Filters" under the list of items labeled "Not Necessary to Check for CARB Exemption.

The rules say no alterations at all to that part of the system, and even though you are not opening up the vapors to the atmosphere, you ARE altering the system. That would, technically, be a failure item on which my local guys would flag a truck for failure. Reasonableness doesn't seem to be an option with them.
Have you passed California smog with your CCV that way? If so, in what county or general area of our commerce-oppressive Golden State?
Not that I believe any reasonableness has come to the CARB folks, so all I can say is WOW!!
Got this guy's name? We may actually need to quote him sometime in the future.........
Pop
I've spoken to the smog ref up here on the phone several times over the last few years. This time I decided to stop at the facility to meet him. So, yeah, I have his name, phone numbers and his office is in the same complex where my wife works.
And, the regulations are online, on the CARB website.
I once ran across the actual language that exempts the oil vapor separators, and it was on CARB's website, but I doubt that I could find it again! I was too busy at the time studying the regs for reporting heavy trucks (the final deadline was 4 days ago).
I'm getting ready to pull the trigger now on the 3550, after mulling it over for 10 years!
Neil... you bought an entire BOX of filters for the 3550? Did you find a good deal on buying a case versus individually? How much was the case?

It wasn't a whole box....more like a half. I didn't realize any remarkable savings by buying in quantity in this instance. I like to have stock on hand for a couple reasons. #1, I have the part it when I need it, and #2, nothing ever goes down in price.
When I bought the Racor CCV, I ordered a spare filter. Price at that time was $21.19. A year later I ordered 4 more and the price had gone up to $25.31. Looks like like the going rate now is $27-35 bucks.
There is a case of 7 listed on ebay right now for $184.38 plus $16.16 shipping. That would last you forever and a day.
