Recently switched from GM to Ford X - need shocks?
Recently traded in our worn out 1994 Suburban for a 2005 Excursion, Eddie Bauer package, V-10, 165k miles and doing some small maintenance fixes. I'm the second owner of the truck and it was driven by a female prior to me. She never towed anything and it's absolutely immaculate inside and out. It seems to have had a pampered life, and I plan to keep it that way, however I bought it to haul the family and tow. We tow a Jeep Grand Cherokee once a month within a couple hours of the house, tow a 22' trailer full of ATV's a couple times a year, and tow a 19' ski boat about every other weekend in the summer (10 times).
As far as I know everything is stock on it, but it seems to sit a little higher than some other Ex's I've seen around town.
The first fixes were ball joints, front brake pads, and some newer tires. But now I need shocks.... I think? I have some wandering in the front end and some thumps in the front end when you hit bumps in the road. Sounds like the shocks are bottoming out or something. Any advice on brand of shocks or could it be another issue for my bumping and wandering?
Here are a couple pictures from the car lot when I bought it.
Looks good! Welcome to the Ford side! The shocks are most likely worn out unless they have been replaced at some point by the previous owner. The springs are also know to sag over time which limits the amount of suspension travel. Check the amount of room between the spring and the bump stops and you'll see what I'm talking about. The popular shocks are the Bilsteins and the Rancho RS9000's. The Bilsteins tend to give a harsher/firmer ride while the Ranchos are adjustable to your tastes. I love my Ranchos - usually keep them on 3 front and 4 rear after a bit of experimentation. The front steering damper can also be replaced for a bit more control with the steering wander. I used the Rancho RS5410 on mine which was a direct bolt in and have almost no wander. I think what little I have left is due to the roads in my area more than anything else.
x2 on the Ranchos... The bumping sound may be from the sway bar bushings. I replaced mine with some from energy suspension and no more thumping sounds...
First thing I would do, and it's purely astetic and personal choice, is get the bug guard and window rain guards. They just make it look better IMO. Without it, looks naked.
nice truck, good choice. i would look at shockwarehouse.com they have amazing deals free shipping on all orders over $100.00 and prices are amazing. you could prolly get some bilsteins cheap on their. weathertech def. for you bug n window guards. also the digital cut floor liners are amazing for that truck. my friend has one he has them all thru out the whole truck
