Hi, I have a 99 350 7.3 PS that has some turbo issues. I am a mechanic but have had very little experience with turbo trouble so I'm needing some help.
The truck works fine , no smoke or any other issues. I have no Turbo whine at all and very little boost PSI, 8 PSI max ot full throttle on the road. There's no whime at all , NONE , zero , zip!! I have an Edge programmer on it that is always set it tow or #1 mode. I'm thinking I have waste gate issues but again I'm not sure. It was fine when I bought it but I belive it quit sometime ago and possibly over last winter as I don't drive it in the winter at all.
So any ideas where to go? I did unhook the MAP sensor and there was no difference.
Start by inspecting the inlet side of the turbo. If it doesn't show any special blade damage and spins freely with no contact with the turbo housing then you can probably eliminate the turbo as being the problem.
Are you getting exhaust pressure up to the turbo? Make sure your up pipes are not leaking.
Check your intercooler hoses to see if one if blown off.
Have you tried it with out the chip installed?
Is this a new truck to you? Is this a new problem?
Try to provide more backround information for troubleshooting.
Thanks for the info., I've had the truck for a year and a half and it had the normal turbo whistle when it was underload and worked well. For some reason I can't pinpoint whe it quit making noise but I belive it was after it sat most of the winter last year. I did look at the intercooler pipes and hoses and they looked good. I put new glow plugs in it this spring and the turbo looked fine , spun freely and had normal play and the blades looked fine. I've heard about the exhaust valve siezing if you are not using the truck, sound like something I should be looking at?
You likely have boost leak(s). Search for and build a boost leak detector, costs less than a Starbucks and a prom queen can use it. Also look for drive-pressure leaks on the turbo up-pipes.
