2012 Oil Pan Change
#18
IMHO...if they are going to make a change...then go the route of cast aluminum with cooling fins. Eliminates the rust issue...but still offers a good cooling surface.
I'm just hoping it wasn't to save a few bucks!

You got to love these oil pan threads......a couple of weeks ago the cliff notes of the last thread was that Ford switched to the composite pans because they were greedy and just wanted to make more money because at the time the speculation was that the composite pan was crap and cheaper to manufacture......zoom ahead to the present and now Ford is greedy and just want to make more money because the metal pan is crap and cheaper!
First off...believe it or not...Ford is in the business to make money! That means that they have to figure out the least expensive way to manufacture thier product and then figure out how to sell it for the most money they can...you know...buy low, sell high! Nothing wrong with that what so ever...... My guess is that it was a combination of public perception of the composite pan being "weak" , vendor problems, and the fact that the metal pan is less expensive to make which lead them to switch.

Just ordered a 2012 PSD 6.7... Was actually kind of looking forward to the composite pan with the 1/4 turn plug. Even tho I wasnt excited about the side mounted plug (purely for mess reasons)... Wasnt too worried about the polymer material as technology definitely can support this material in high stress applications (firearms, pelican cases..etc..)
Im not going to try to speculate why they made the change but i have mixed feelings about it. I presume that if there was a problem with structural integrity a TSB or recall could easily be issued to correct the problem. We all know what were getting into with the metal pan so im not worried about that. Would have been cool to try something new tho. Who knows maybe my truck will show up with the composite...doubt it tho.
