Ya maybe. It is definitely nice to have cheap fixes. When i got my 88 ranger i was having problems with it dieing after driving it on the freeway and we went through and replaced the whole distributor just to discover that the heater core was leaking onto the inertia switch and causing it to short out, so we replaced the leaking core and bypassed the switch... Well at least i got a new dizzy :/ now i come to find out i might even have to replace the little 2.9 in it... At that point i think it would be time to sell it.

Replace the 2.9 with a 4.0 V6 and be on your way. Always liked the ranger, however, if I were to get one, it would be a 91-92 model, as that is my favorite style.

Happy New Years forum. I am kinda having the same trouble as OP. 2004 F-250 SD V-10
not often driven. I know I know. But las time out for horse feed, starter lagged then less than 1 second caught and started right up. I almost stayed home but. Got to feed store and no start at all for trip home. AAA saves my *** again. Had battery charged and checked and showed dead cell. Replaced, still not cranking over. All the accessories now come on though so battery was truly dead. Before I crawl under, or blow up the computer how does one TS a newer truck? My last was a 1992 F-150 and had fender mounted solenoid that I could jump with anything. This one has about the same but more wires. I see a red and back stacked coming out of the bottom region of solenoid. I tapped the starter case lightly with plastic mallet and no help. Any suggestions on where to start the TS?
thanks
Tank

PS after checking simple manual. found relay in fuse panel under dash and it gives a good single click when key is engaged. Online mechanic says no traditional solenoid to check like my old truck. there is an electrical device mounted on inside fender in the same spot as old solenoid would have been any farther suggestions? Before I crawl under with voltage testers and wrenches?

Sorry i don't know anything about that stuff... About 6 months ago or so, i actually learned that diesels don't have any spark plugs so that shows the extent of my knowledge :/

He said it is a V10, so it is not a diesel. However, I am not familiar with 2004's. This 93 is my newest vehicle.

04 V-10 is gas. And I do love my truck and I did have to crawl on the ground today
and yep, was under the truck for about hour and half. Of course spent more time looking for tools than actually working on truck. Starter pulled and taken to local Auto Parts store that has test stand. Failed x 3 then the guys reset all the connections and it worked rough x 2. Then 4 more fails. New starter 164.00. And again I say I hate working on starters, especially without a pit. That top bolt is always a pain in the ***. And can you believe they have gone to 10mm fasteners on the starters. Well I have to check the local DC motor shop to see if they can beat the price at the Parts Store. thanks for the input guys.

I agree with you regarding working on starters. They are always a pain to work on.

I also am having issues with mine, when it's warm it cranks really rough and feels like it is catching on the flywheel or something. It is a starter for the 460 and i have a 400 but i don't think that would cause it not to work... I just don't have the money currently to purchase the starter

Well, I replaced the battery cable ends today, and the 30 amp trailer battery charger fuse. Still no start. Over did it by being on my feet too long doing the work, and now I am sore all over.

Tomorrow I will check the battery with the volt/ohm meter again. I tried the screwdriver on the small top screw of the solenoid and the large stud to the right of it, and got nothing. No spark, and the engine did not turn over.

Is that big stud coming directly form the battery? Maybe the whole solenoid is faulty or something

Haven't tried bypassing the solenoid, maybe I will do that tomorrow.

This is the first thing you should have tried, i don't get why you haven't, it's using a screwdriver to create a bridge between the two threaded terminals of the starter solenoid, no biggie...
