Is this something that I can do or would it be best to take it to a shop and buy one from them and have them install it?
Its hard for us to answer that question since we don't know your electrical and mechanical experience levels. But having installed many RS units I can safely say that just about anybody can do it if they plan it right and don't rush the job.
If you're going to get into installing a RS also get one that has an alarm. The alarm feature can save you some money on your car insurance. How much depends on your company. Also, taking the time to connect the door locks to the RS system is a must.
The one fault of this item is that they do not include a hood switch. So make sure you get one ahead of time. I like to use magnetic alarm contacts because mechanical switches like to rust.
