and the new, I went with:

Seeing the old one in pieces doesn't help. How do the diameters of the drives compare? What exactly is interfering or preventing you from corkscrewing it in?

well the new modern Bendix starter drive type is in fact larger in diameter. I tried for a solid hour to get it to fit and it won't clear the flywheel. I'd love to find the person that got this to work.
It looks like I will need to change to the old style spring, etc.
I was really hoping to get that new Bendix style to work.
