Wow, NJ, well can't say I'm surprised, there are all types that live here. And yeah castle laws in this state suck which is why I have some really big dogs who go nuts when a stranger is even walking by the house. I'm glad he was nailed though and I would make damn sure that he gets at least something on his record even if it means you have to take off work for a day or two to show up in court.
But I also agree that he was obviously scoping the place out and waiting for something good to be left out to snag. The good news is that if he lives in a good neighborhood and has a truck like he does then he should be able to afford you a new transmission cooler.

Sorry ....no offense to NJ meant....I personally would not move to any non concealed carry state...that's all I meant......no offense to NJ !
You can't offend me about New Jersey. I have been wanting to get out of here for 25 years. But the wife won't leave her family. I was born and reared in Georgia. She just has not ever traveled enough to see how different it is in other states. Sigh.....
Definitely recommend the security camera. I just ordered an 8 camera DVR setup since my X got broken into on the 28th. Costco had them on sale for $599 ($300 off).
5 cameras in the front and 3 in the back paired with 300watt motion sensing flood lights should help with identification next time someone takes a shot at me.

Those work pretty well. Is it a Lorex system?
We got one at Costco a couple years ago. It hasn't been flawless, but it has helped us out a lot. We did actually have a break-in one time and the camera got the idiots on camera. The cops came and got the video off of it and were able to use it to find them. The kids were stupid enough to wear their high school soccer jerseys...
I would highly recommend a battery backup system for it though. That way it won't be off for a period of time.
That's awful that the guy did that. I agree with the others, he must have been watching it somehow. I'd worry about him trying to come back to pull parts off the truck some night.
Right now I've got all four doors, the hood, and the one smashed fender sitting outside. They are all completely stripped, so if they went missing I wouldn't be out too much, but I'd still like to be able to get the scrap value for them instead of someone else. I need to find a place to get them back inside soon.
Around here, thieves are occasionally unearthed in shallow graves on national forest property........... acute lead poisoning is bad ongoing problem out here in the sticks.
Unfortunately, for several reasons, I let my FFL and state licenses go about 7 or 8 years ago and closed the shop. I had manufacturing licenses.
I have a section of my garage that is dedicated to all the tooling, materials and equipment from the shop. including a lathe, mill, etc.
I still dabble, but only on my own guns. I shoot about 4 to 5k rounds a year now. Down quite a bit from 10k or so when the shop was running. 22 to .50 cal BMG, and everything in between.
Too much liability to do it on the side. It can be done, but the owner has to stay in the room with the firearm at all times and it cannot be left overnight. Anything else and the ATF cals it 'dealing in firearms" and requires licensing
Just from what I have read so far it sounds like you learned a lesson the hard way. If you need to store stuff temporarily dump it in the living\family room yes the wife will not be pleased but flowers and chocolates are cheap compared with getting new parts.
