Toolbox Install Irittation

Ran into a snag installing my aluminum truck tool box in my new 2012 F150 Supercab....I'm posting it here in case anybody gets a tool box for their F150 and never noticed.....

I have a tool box that I pulled from the 2010 Super Duty I traded in when I bought my F150 last Monday, the distance between the bed bolts was considerably different on the F150 so I drilled 2 more holes to match the F150 and set the box in place. Something I hadn't taken into consideration was how far the fuel filler tube came into the inner pickup box, my toolbox is the style that sits flat on the floor and is pretty much flush with the bed rails and it is basically the full width of a full size truck. In order to make this box fit the F150 I broke out a big ol' hammer and gave it some serious adjustments. So as a FYI if you are in the market to purchase a new tool box to install in the bed of your F150 make sure you take the fuel filling tube into account and get something narrower at the base or you will need to hammer like crazy on your shiny new box to make it fit.

On a more positive note I gotta say I'm liking the Ecoboost so far, took a trip to Jackman,ME yesterday which is alot of hilly driving and I still averaged 19.4 mpg for the trip...even more impressive was how well the truck handled in the freezing rain we hadh. I'm thinking my "downgrade" from a Super Duty is going to turn out to be a great decision for my uses.

Nice report, thank you sir. I know exactly where Jackman is, I grew up in Stockton Springs. Very hilly and treacherous winter driving for sure.

Thats awesome on the trade. Don't worry too much about the size/ capacity difference. I went from an '05 Dodge 2500, QuadCab, 4x4, Diesel, then to an '08 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, Gasser, then briefly to a lemon '11 Ford Ranger and then to my '11 F-150. I have owned countless pick-up trucks prior to those trucks also but won't bore anyone with those details.

Anyway I'm basically saying I'm seeing more and more folks downsizing from 3/4 and full ton sized trucks back into 1/2 tons because the 1/2 tons they make today are so fantastic in every way. I loved my Cummins Diesel Ram, but honestly my gasser 5.0L F150 gets the same or even better milage in every scenario except towing something (And I don't do that often enough) to really justify the cost of purchasing and owning another diesel 3/4 ton truck.

My F150 also rides soooo much smoother and is quicker-faster around town than my old diesel Ram was anyway as a bonus.

Question Toolbox helpful hint: Thanks! ...and a question for you

Dixiedog: Thanks for your posting...I'll be on the lookout for that problem. I am planning to buy a toolbox for my new F-150.

Well, I say "new" - it's a 2011 XLT I just bought (year end closeout deal) and Pool Runner, it sounds a lot like yours except silver metallic color. They equip this model down here with what they call, "the Texas edition" - it's got all that stuff you mentioned with a tow package. Undoubtedly the nicest (& most expensive) vehicle I've ever owned!

The only other truck I ever bought was a {new} 1987 Dodge Dokata - the first year they came out. It had a four cylinder engine and I kept it until it burned up a couple of years ago (I think it was some kind of voltage regulator problem).
==
Anyway...back to tool boxes. Can you guys recommend a brand I ought to consider buying (or any that I should avoid like the plague)? And while it may have a few tools in it...mostly, it's gona have guns (don't ask...) for short periods of time SO I need something fairly secure - the more secure, the better. Open to any suggestions ya might have...I'm all ears...or eyes, as the case may be.

Dixie, I ordered a 48 inch wedge box off the web the other day for my truck. I have the 5.5ft bed and finding a wedged tool chest that fits well has been a challenge. I just decided to go with a chest that was 48 L x 20 deep x 17 tall to fit in between the wheel wells. I need to be able to put a 4ft boat paddle and other stuff in there. Tractor Supply doesn't carry the really nice Delta boxes anymore having switched to a cheaper DeeZee box. I ended up ordering a UWS chest off the web.

Champ198, how did that work out for you? Fit okay?

I've been looking for a flush, Chest style box (perferably, full sized) for my 2011 F-150 and as far as I can tell, nobody makes one to fit the bed in the new F-150s (with the capless gasoline filler tube). Thinking I may have to go the Wedge route myself!

Unhappy Have to go with a cross over or less than full size chest

The new "capless" gas filler tube (2011 & 2012 models) intrudes into the bed and forms a "hump" in front of the driver's side rear wheel well. The hump is about nine inches from the front wall of the bed and sticks out about 4" (+/-) and is about that tall above the floor of the bed too....just enough to cause toolbox fitting problems.
.
Just gotta believe it's only a matter of time before tool box manufacturers "catch up" their designs with the most popular pickup in the world!
