I'm planning a fluid and filter change on my '78/400M/C6. I can get type F fluid in quarts. If I have it done at a lube shop, I'm pretty sure they will drop the pan, flush it and re-fill with "universal dex/merc" fluid. Should I drop the pan and change with "type F" or should I get it flushed and filled with the universal fluid?

Pro and cons?
I would use what ever you've been running in the tranny. I prefer having the system flushed, you're sure to get all the old fluid replaced with new.
Based on what ND just posted, it looks like mercon should be the right choice.
Ive never done it, but from what i'm told you can put type F in a trans built for mercon. The type F will cause the trans to shift harsher, but from what i'm told, this is an old school trick used by racers, ... kinda the poor man's shift kit.
this is quite simply the most idiotic advice ever given in the whole history of FTE.
Owners manual says Merc ... that's the correct fluid. period.
After you just stated somewhat the same thing in regards to Type F?
You have some serious issues, it won't be long before your banned with such a negative attitude.
If you knew the real history of why Ford chose to go with a slicker/ softer shift versus the better and firmer Type F shift you would understand it makes no difference.
If Chevy's slushbox is smoother, although less efficient Joe Blow or Soccer Mom Nancy who test drives a Chevy then a Ford will likely choose the Chevy.
What's Ford going to do? Join the crowd that's what.
Type F only applies to the COM, FMX, C4, C6. Nobody is going to use or should use Type F in a modern transmission.

What?! You just said that you read it would work. I know you qualified it by saying you haven't tried it yourself, but Josh's follow-up was hardly the worst post on FTE (believe me there have been some bad ones).
I personally don't have experience with the differences and use whatever is written on the dipstick or written in the manual.
