Hi guys. My ranger has the simpler trim package w/o the tach. I am a big fan of knowing what the motor is doing at all times as i live in a very hilly area of MT. I have put tachs on rigs before but have never really had to play the the D.I.S that is underhood my 2.3l. Is there a wire that you can use as a signal wire or should i invest in an inductive tach?
ps. what your rangers run (rpm) out on the Highway? (Mine is a 5sp)
Use the Tan/Yellow IDM wire as your tach, it may already have a single plug for just such a purpose, otherwise you have to fine it. Some years may use different colors, so it may not be tan/yellow on yours.
ill check that tag out that would be nice to know. However i took the truck out on the highway today for the first time with my scan tool hooked up to it. I am not sure if i need to worry about the rpms its only running about 2500 in fourth at 55 mph and 2300 in fifth at 65 and that is only able to happen on a straight with the wind behind me. For the terrain that i live in its going to need more hp or tq to get out on the road much any thoughts on that?
Inductive won't give engine R.P.M. for cases of tuning E.T.C. As for hooking up tach question - try Autometer digital tach. They are available il different sizes.
you didn't say what year and I'm only good on the years listed below, but: find a dash in the wreckers that has the stuff you want. the parts interchange except sometimes the wires are missing in the harness. I picked and chose on my ranger from one of the parts rangers I had until I got a full compliment of gauges instead of idiot lights. You'll need a good wiring diagram. Have fun and remember no truly custom mod is a slam dunk.
