Just got a used 2001 van turbo that supposedly only has 20,000 miles on it. Seems tight with no end play. Is there any way to tell, if I tear it apart, whether it may need a rebuild or not? I hate to spring for a rebuild kit if not needed.
I couldn't stand not knowing what the insides looked like so I dove in. Glad I did. Found some serious corrosion on compressor housing and wheel. Cleaned it up with steel wool and ordered a rebuild kit. I will send the guts in to get balanced and will include my old comp wheel in case the van wheel is too far gone.

Steve who are you using to have the balancing done ?
Thanks Steve Have you ever talk to Ron's because I have called 2x's and the no one ever called back. Not good business in my book. I thinking of using Midwest Turbo in WI. they answer their phone and have been very helpful. And they sell a performance thrust bearing set up. And I do believe it would work in the van turbo too. Stock uses a 270 degree thrust bearing and the performance one is 360 degree bearing and has a better oiling set up. Midwest Turbo Connection Frequently Asked Questions
I myself decided on staying with my stock e99 turbo. But I am kicking around the idea of going with the 1.0 turbine housing. The reason is I want to keep my ebv so I can use it as a exhaust brake.
So where did you find your van turbo ?
