Shopping around I can get both for a total of about $50 shipped. I have read some reviews of people with chevys and people say a 2 year old could open and close the tailgate after these two mods.. All it take is unlatching the handle and the tailgate slowly opens on it own, and then its a 2 finger easy close.
I really dont have any problems with the tailgate as is, it just looks like the once time I have my hands full it would be nice haha..
No but I have a related (in a hijack kinda way) question: my '04 tailgate has never been damaged, yet it's a job and a half to close it. My wife hates it and refuses to try. The '08 F250 we have at work is extremely easy to close in comparison, yet I see no difference in mounting points or anything else. Any ideas why?

Yes, the '08 and up is counterbalanced with a torsion spring. It's built into the left side hinge design, IIRC.
I have the EZ-down shock on my truck. I love that thing! I can unlatch the tailgate with one hand and it slowly drops. I've had it over 2 years and it still works great.
I just ordered the ez down from realtruck.com it was something like $31 shipped.. I found the torsion bar thing on Amazon for $19, I might have some gift cards from there so I will have to take a look for those.
The torsion bar requires a clamp inside the gate to hold the far end.
If your gate does not come with the torsion rod originally it will not have the clamp.
I placed my order off Amazon for the torsion rod last night, I found a gift card that I had stashed. So it was just under $19 (if you add something to the order to make the total over $25 you get free shipping)

Maybe torsion rod is not the correct term? This is an aftermarket part that is drilled into the side of the bed and then in the bottom of the tailgate, the majority of this part is external (unlike the internal one on the 08+ tailgates)
cbzdel did you see that there was a 12% rebate form on realtruck's website? I think I might order one too.
I did not notice that, thanks!! For anyone thinking about ordering check the link at the top of the page for an additional 12% mail in rebate!! So that gives you a check in the mail for around $3.75, cant beat that, so its less than $30 shipped for this product. I have never been so excited about $3.75 haha
I've seen that torsion bar before but worry that after time it may rub a hole through tailgate or at least scuff it and cause rust. Anyone experiance this?
When you install the EZ Down, you have to make sure that when the tailgate is in the lowered position it is supported by the cable only and not the EZ Down. If weight is transfered to the EZ Down when putting weight on the tailgate, the aluminum part of the EZ Down that goes into the hole on the tailgate will break.
Also the aluminum part that goes into the tailgate has a tendency to work its way loose from opening and closing the tailgate. Blue thread locker doesn't hold it tight either. I didn't try the red thread locker yet.
