im looking to swap the axel shafts on my 98 f-250. It has the 7 lug and i want some 8's. im pretty sure its a dana 50 in the front and a 10.25 in the rear, any idea where i can get some axel shafts or if its even possible to swap it out for an 8
Is it a Heavy Duty or a Light Duty (F150 body). With 7- lugs as a '98 I'm believing you have the LD.
The LD's are reverse cut 8.8's up front and semi-floating 10.25's in the back. The front on an LD is a not an easy swap... completely different hardware than the old conventional leaf spring design. People claim to have seen 8 lugs under the hub caps on some 2WD versions, so they may be out there... just not an easy find.
The back should be fairly easy. Older F250's used a semifloating 10.25 inch 8 lug axle on the light duty ones. So all that should swap over. I know there is a 10.25 that uses long shafts and one that uses short shafts, so you may have to watch out there. I think its around 92 or 93 that the change was made.
The front is a different story. I don't really know what will swap over. The axle itself really isn't an issue because the hubs are what you have to worry about. The F250 SD use a sealed hub that you may be able to use parts of, but I'm really not sure. You could have your existing hubs redrilled for an 8 lug pattern but I dont' think that will work very well either because of differening bolt circle diamters and wheel center diameters (for wheels are hub centric, not lug centric). So this is critical. I put some thought into it, but never any serious research. I wanted a full floating axle so I could get a detroit, but gave up and just got a Trac Loc since I don't do much off roading anyway.
i got the rear axels from an 86 f-250 8 lug i just measured and went from their. but since i have no front end goodies yet. They are still sitting on the floor in my garage. Im gonna half to really research this. DO you guys think the ford dealer will let me look at some of their info? Like their parts spec sheets or something like it? Thanks for the help
