2005 4x4 Superduty - Rusted out rear backing plates?
My 2005 F250 4x4 has 70K miles on it. It has never been used for forging streams and has never been in water other than rain. It has seen minimal snows. The rear backing plates on this truck are rusted out where the parking brake shoe retaining pins pass through the backing plate. What the heck? This just seems very wrong. To make matters worse, Ford does not sell the backing plates individually. Instead, I am forced to buy the entire backing plate assembly which costs $271 and it includes all of the parking brake parts. All of these parts are like new on my truck. I only need the backing plates. This is really a rant about parts which have rusted away because of poor quality. I am appalled that these parts only lasted 6 years. Something is very wrong when these kind of parts are not correctly protected against rust.
i had napa order mine. first time in 130k is when mine went out on my 05. i plow with it every year and it has seen rain. did you have a hard time getting the rotor off. i did, which was what screwed my backing plates up. i shouldve backed off the shoes a bit. i dnt know what i paid because i charged them. but that price seems outragous.
loooks like they are $78 for the pair on napas website.
Welcome to the Super Duty rotting dust shield club.... I found one of mine rotted out this summer when putting new rear brakes on at 70K miles. I was lucky I could get the parking brake pins to hold so I bought a little time as I needed to get the truck back on the road for a 1500 mile camping trip in a few days. This truck has barely ever run in the snow yet rot I have.
I was tipped off to GunnerDog's great post. My son works for Jegs and he said they sell the Dorman dust shields.
That is the same part number Gunnerdog used but if you buying make sure the 2005 uses that same part number. I need to do mine this summer and I have to find the axle nut spanner wrench. Right now I'm dealing with exhaust manifold leaks.
PowerstrokeHD - the Ford parts guy told me that he had no listing for the backing plates. I talked with him and he was able to get the price for the entire assemblies down to $217 each which is a little easier to take.
joe_r_dog - The rotors were not too bad to get off. I used the method of putting an 8 foot 2x4 against the backside of the rotor and smacking the end of it on the other side of the truck with a maul. The rotors came off very easy. I never thought of calling NAPA for a part like this. Has anyone used these Belkamp parts and commented on how well they fit?

FordCamping - I bought the axlenut wrench at Autozone for $12. You are having exhaust manifold leaks? Is yours a diesel? My 6.0 starting leaking at the manifolds at 5K miles. Ford added gaskets and it has been fine ever since.
I am absolutely appalled that these backing plates are rusting away so quickly. This is bad. Very bad.

Hi Ron
Thanks for the info on the axle nut wrench. That will help on the search and destroy mission this spring.
The manifold leak is on the 6.8 V10 gasser. In my case it was like the studs back out. I could slide a 0.005 feeler gage up between the head and the manifold. Ah yup that is the problem. Here is the thread 2005 F350 V10 exhaust manifold
The backing plates rotting out, yeh I was shocked too. I do not have mine off yet but it was like they are 2 pieces of thin material seamed together. Water got between the, no way out and it then rots. I was pealing it out in sheets. It might be all one piece but what ever they made them from or treated them with for sure is not holding up. Mine was probalty toast a year or more ago. The only reason I found it was I changed the brakes and I could not get the pin to lock in on the parking brake. Was like it was too short. I looked around the back side and saw the back almost rotted through
A great pulling truck, but there are some issues to deal with.
What region do you live in? It shouldn't matter to much and the plates should last a lot longer than that, but salt and those brine solutions will accelerate it greatly. Look at rust belt cars vs southern or south western cars. You see some pretty antique iron driving around outside the rust belt.
Baltimore! Ha! My neighbor's from Baltimore! We're both east coasters living in the North west now. I was born in florida, but my parents are from South west Pa. Navy brat here, been everywhere.
That's pretty crumby and it's probably out of warranty. Probably similar to the triton spark plug issue. An aftermarket shield may be of better quality. Are these drum backing plates or dust shields for a disc brake set up? I'd also call around to some wrecking yards if it's drum backing plates. Sometimes Ford may have gotten some bad plating etc in a batch (ie poor qc).
I used to work manufacturing maintenance and I could go blue in the face recounting the qc follies that slipped by. Especially during night shift.
Mine rotted out at 43,XXX miles, I was more disgusted than dissapointed. What really kicked me, was when I found the Diff cover was rotted out and seeping too.
SasquatchZilla - These backing plates are used to hold all of the parking/emergency brake parts. Because I now see that these plates are available through many aftermarket shops, I believe that this is engineered obsolescence by Ford. These parts should most definitely have been rustproofed. Some of the pictures on this site of these rusted out plates are
unbelievable!
John,
The wrench that I bought is marked 1 9/16". The guys at Autozone could not find out what application it was for but I took a chance and it was correct for my 2005. 12 bucks was a deal when considering that I found in online for as much as $45.
