Wow. I spent many weekends pulling a 24' travel trailer behind a 2000 explorer V6 w/4.10 rear end. Yes, it was slow and we knew we were limited to fairly local destinations. Tranny would get hot pretty easily.
Then, got a '08 expedition with the 5.4 and 3.31 rear end, up to a 28' trailer. Still slow, much more stable, good power up to 50mph but just could not safely hold 70mph on the interstate. Took full throttle to fight wind drag above 65!
The family has great memories of traveling around with our campers. We still have the expedition (really nice vehicle) but now I have a 36' fifth wheel and tow it with ease using my truck. It does not matter how we get there, we just go camp and have fun.
I'm glad the op got going and I hope y'all build some great memories. The 5.4 would obviously do it, just have to go slower.
