Parts Washers

What type of cleaning fluid does everyone use in there parts cleaners?
If you use diesel or kerosene, how bad does it smell up the garage?
Is there anyone that uses the advertised bio-degradable stuff?

Thanks
Greg

Go to NAPA and get 1 or 2 5gallon cans of their parts washer, it works great.....

I dont own a commerical part's washer. I built my own back in 1980. I use a mixture of my own making.
5 Gallon Mineral Spirit's
5 Gallon K1 Kerosene
1 Gallon Transmission fluid
1Gallon Brake fluid

It may look like a strange mixture but it work's for me.

Big1,

Are you building a bomb? Kerosene and mineral spirits great degreaser, tranny fluid for lubing, and brake fluid for penetrating.

What a Cocktail !!!!!!

Word to the wise:

Smoking is not recommended when Big1 cleans parts !!!!!!!!

Now that I'm finished complementing Big1, I'll let you know what I've used. Similar recipe, oil and Varsol. Used it to free up a 3 on the tree set up at the end of the column. Would not move at all and I couldn't even get it apart in that condition. Let it soak for a couple of days then no problem.

Like Big1 above, I know the risk for fire, one just has to be careful with what they handle. Besides, if it isn't risky, it's not as FUN !!

Again, Big1, don't think I'm slamming your cleaning solution, just poking a little fun. To each his own.

That solution sounds a lot like Ed's Red Gun cleaner.

Smoking is a diffenent NO NO.
I had a buddy use the washer once, and caught him smoking, standing right over it. I slapped him in the head and asked him if he was nut's!!
My work shop is small but I want to keep it.

I just got a small 3 gallon parts washer, and it is worth it's weight in gold. It makes cleaning bolts, bearings, drain plugs, small engine parts, and so on much easier. I got some stuff in a 5 gallon can from Northen Tool and Equipment. It works great. I had some water based stuff, but it froze in the cold winters we have here. That wouldn't be much fun heating the garage for a couple of days to thaw the parts cleaner before using. Not to mention destroying the pump. Don't use water based. Petro based works best.
