Oil change interval/type

I have done some searching and would just like to know what some of you guys run for oils, synthetic or conventional, and what interval you change your oil. I'm not looking for any Amsoil/Royal Purple/Mobil 1 arguments. Just wondering about conventional vs. synthetic and intervals. Currently I go every 2500 to 3000 miles using conventional oil. I've heard synthetic will provide better mileage as well as better protection, but have also heard it's a waste of money! So....just wondering what you guys run! Thanks, and sorry if this has been discussed, I'm just hoping for some current opinions/data.

I'm running motorcraft synthetic blend 5w20 with motorcraft filter on my V10... I also change out every 2500 miles.

Twice a year I run pennzoil 5w 20 with (active cleaning agents) for 500 miles.
This oil is very light in color, almost looks like cooking oil.

Have had 192k miles without any issues or leaks. Engine sounds and feels like day one.

This is also my first car/truck with over 55k miles and the 34th vehicle I've owned.

I have been blessed with this truck!

I use Mobil 1 synthetic and Motorcraft filter. I change every 5K. I know it can go longer, but the oil just looks so black. Bought the truck at 113K, now at 126K.

To me it was a waste of money as my consumption went from about 1 quart per oil change to over 4 quarts when using Mobile 1. Others with the V10 have reported this same thing.

So you're saying the V-10 started using oil when switching to synthetic?

I also have a neighbor that says I'm wasting resources by changing my oil too often. He claims you can go 5000 to 7500 miles between oil changes even with conventional.

I change my Benz oil every year, about 7k miles, but it holds 10 quarts.
I just baby the Ex cause of the miles and small amount of oil it holds.

I've run Mobil1 in all my vehicles. Not because it's the best synthetic out there, but it is easy to get, goes on sale and I don't feel like I need to push the interval to the max to get my $$ out of it. I would say 2500-3000 miles on synthetic is very often. Unless your engine really shears the oil or your engine has other problems I don't see why you'd need to change that often.(or you drive in extremely severe conditions) I change my oil at 5k miles and a Motocraft filter. All that said, oil is cheap insurance so better to change too often than not enough.

Just a suggestion, but you really should put what engine you have in your sig. When I first saw this post, I assumed it was a gasser, but I HATE assuming. So, I looked in your sig, and I figured it was a safe assumption because you have a tune from 5 Star, but still, it would be good if you put the engine type in your sig.

Rep points from me if you do! I'll even add a Scoobie snack!

LOL, not I don't even have to look at your sig! Aint no way yours is a smoker with that statement, LOLOLOL!

I changed the oil in my Lightning the other day and was laughing. I finished the whole job, draining the oil, old filter off, new filter on, with a little over 5 quarts in, in less time than it takes to drain the 4.5 gallons of oil from my PSD's.

I forgot how easy it is to change the oil in a gasser because my two primary vehicles are PSD's.

I used to go every 5k. I've run Mobil 1 in both since new or new to the fleet. I converted both Excursions to Amsoil a couple years ago and the F-450 has been run on it since new. I push it a little longer with the Amsoil because they say so. I use the full synthetic 5W-30 and they say it has a service interval of 25k or one year for normal use and 15k for severe use. I went about 10k on the first time and then went just shy of 15k for the second. I don't think I'm considered severe service, but around 14k it seemed like it was time. So I figured I better listen to the engine instead of going by the Amsoil spec and just go ahead and change it. I think for the Amsoil full syn, 12k is a good range. I don't know if going this long is good or not, but the manufacturer says it'll handle it. I haven't sent out an oil sample though, but I'll admit I did save one from the last oil change.

The Amsoil in the '05 has about 5k on it I think, but if I were to get it out again to drive in the V10 form, I would change it due to age.

When someone makes a suggestion like this I am quick to remind them of the amount of resources that went into manufacturing these vehicles, and that I am being most ecologically conservative by making the vehicle last as long as possible! I am always amazed at how many miles the average taxi cab driver has on their vehicle, and when I ask them the secret, they always say oil changes... and usually at 2000 to 2500 mile intervals, religiously. I am a smoker (see signature) and I use Shell Rotella T6, and change about every 5000 miles.

I usually go 6K between oil changes on the Ex because I am worried about stiction and oil shearing. On my old dodge cummins I typically go 10K but I always did Oil Analysis.

I appreciate Amsoil's technical capabilities but I still cringe when I see this type of post. If you're planning to run 7k or more between oil changes I would STRONGLY recommend getting your oil analyzed. Most oil, even conventional oils are good up to about 10k miles as long as the contaminant and oil dilution level remains LOW. It's not really the oil that's the problem anymore it's the performance of the oil as contaminants and fuel blow by build up and dilute the oil significantly reducing it's lubricating properties.

I use Castrol Syntec in all my "cars" and I change my oil at 5k mile intervals. This is my first Excursion and PSD and I'll be using Shell Rotella T6 5w40. Changes at 5k miles will minimize the chance of oil dilution and maximize the life of the engine.
