Problem Starting On 88 F150

Hey guys, my dad has an 88 F150 4x4 with the 300 6 shooter and the 3/4 ton running gear (heavy half?) and the 5 speed manual. He is having problems with it starting, but it is either in the clutch pedal sensor or in the starter itself. When cold, you almost have to stand on the clutch pedal to get it down far enough to engage the sensor enough to allow it to start, and when hot, it wants to turn, but slowly, as if it has starter heat soak. Has anyone else had this problem? Any fixes? I am also curious if there is another clutch pedal sensor that is adjustable and a direct replacement, as his is a non-adjustable sensor. Thanks!

The clutch switch is either on the pedal support bracket or wrapped around the MC rod that runs thru the firewall. Both types ARE adjustable.

The slow starting is probably from an old starter relay on the fender by the battery, or a bad starter. Have it tested for current draw during starting.

Hey, thanks for the help. I have already seen the sensor, and there is no way to adjust it. It even shows 2 styles in his manual. I have told him that we need to pull the starter to get it checked, so maybe seeing someone else suggesting it will help my cause (THANK YOU!). I'll have to check the draw on the solenoid, and go from there. Still, that doesn't remedy the fact that you have to stand on the clutch pedal to get it to start. Any other ideas- I know that it is not adjustable due to no elongated slots for mounting, and no screw type shafts on the unit. Thanks again!

Problem Starting On 88 F150

My '92 F150 4.9L M5OD had the same trouble with the clutch pedal. I had to really punch it hard to the floor to get the truck to start. I cannot recall if cold weather played any role or not. Anyway after several posts and suggestions here I ended up at the local Ford dealer. The problem was with the Clutch/Brake pedal assembly. It was just about to fail and leave me sitting. The new assembly fixed the problem. The good news is the part does not cost much. The bad news is the labor. It takes a while to get the old assembly out and install the new one.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 05:35 PM (EST)]Thanks for the response. I will try that, and see what happens. I don't think it can be as hard as switching the pedals over on my Z28 from auto pedals to manual pedals- that was kind of a pain in the wazoo. Thanks again!
