Any help would be great, I have a 1994 f-150 302 with the aode tranny. the first five miles of the day between 30-40 mph the rpm's go up the speed stays the same it does this for about 2-3 seconds at a time and somedays it don't do it at all.
I have read in many posts that the MLPS sensor goes out causing the transmission to not know what gear it is in. The MLPS tells the tranny what position the gear selector is in. If it is failing it could be telling the tranny that you are shifting in to neutral. Not sure how to test it out though. Hopefully someone else here will know. Also you may want to post this in the transmission forum. You may get a better response.
A $12 Haynes manual has the test procedures for ALL the sensors, including the MLPS.
I don't think the trucks ever used the AODE - I think you have the E4OD, which is know to have flaws if manfactured before '95. Unfortunately, you may need a rebuild. Have a good trans shop look into it, or pull the codes yourself. Haynes tells how to do that at home for free, too.
My '90 Club Wagon van has the overdrive unit. (on a 460) The trans is shot in all gears. Won't move at all, and fluid is blacker than crude oil! I think someone put something in there like brake fluid or something to make it work long enough to sell it! (No I didn't buy it like that, my friend did, and he didn't check the fluid's color)
If you say pre '94 trans have problems, does a rebuild usually include some sort of upgrade package to make them better? I need to know this, as it is time to fix the thing for winter.
Thanks!
Mark

Ford started it; Ford will finish it!
The tranny does it weather it is cold or warm outside, but it still only does this the first five or so miles. I did clean the MLPS sensor and it did not help/ maybe I should just buy a new sensor. the truck only has 70,000mi on it. I bought the thing w/40,000mi and I have had the tranny flushed twice. thanks
Another real common problem with this tranny is somehow the valvebody to transmission bolts loosen ever so slightly. With mine when it was shifting to the next gear it would feel like I was driving over rumble strips. I retourqed them and it corrected my problem. You may want to have a place like AAMCO check it out. Some places do it for free.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 09:58 AM (EST)]Adam,
You're experiencing the same thing my 94 F150, 5.0, Supercab did. It's the MLPS on the side of the tranny. Mine cost me around $85 at the dealer. What happens is that there is a potentiometer inside of the MLPS and it sends a voltage to the computer telling it what gear it's in. Over time the potentiometer will start to go bad and send bad voltages to the computer. When the computer receives an "bad" voltage it will cause a problem in shifting. Mine did it while driving at 70 MPH, starting out, stopping, etc. It's real easy to change out. It mounts on the side of the tranny where the shift cable attaches. Some people think it's the neutral safety switch, but it's the MLPS. Take the old one out, install the new one, line up the marks and tighten it down. Hope this helps.
