Ok I just went and picked up a 2000 F150 that I inherited from my grandfather today. My uncle has some so called mechanics that work for him that have looked at it and have no clue how to fix it. I personally think that they hurt it more than helping but onto the major part.
Like I said it is a 2000 F150 with a 5.4, auto trans, 4wd and longbed. First things first, they swapped the trans for some reason. I don't know if it would not pull or what. But now it has several trans codes showing, the OD light in the shifter is blinking and it will barely pull in any gear. I do know the trans came from a truck that had caught on fire in a guys yard and burned the engine compartment. I am thinkng some of the sensors might have gotten too hot.
Now on to the engine. The guys took and cut the cat off and did not replace it (running with a section of the exhaust cut out). They told me that the engine would not run before and they got it to run "good" now. It will idle but that is it. When you take and put the trans in gear it sounds like it has a racing "stutter" box on it. It will not run very well and if left long enough the engine will die. I can't remember all the codes that dealt with the engine but I do know that the computer was showing lean on one side of the engine and rich on the other.
Any help on where to start is appreciated. I am mechanically inclined so fixing it myself is not a problem but with this much ***** I am not sure where to begin. I will get a chance to look at it in the morning and get some more details on what I see is wrong. Thanks again.
Your sorting out a mess so be patient.
First you need to list all the codes present, then begin addressing each one.
Then test all the fuses in the engine compartment box..
If there is a big issue with the transmission, it might be a fuse because one fuse powers a lot of items including the transmission solenoids.
A short to ground on one of the OX sensors will blow this fuse and cause a lot of problems.
Good luck.
I went and looked at it again today and found out that it has a 4.6 not the 5.4 like I thought. But I did find that the driver side front o2 sensor is unhooked. So that will help a little. Now to get the exhaust hooked back up like it should be then I'll go from there.
Its been a few days but I finally got a chance to go look at the truck again. I hooked it up to my scanner and pulled 12 codes. Here they are:
P0301-cylinder 1 misfire (no biggy, I'll check on this once I get evreything else sorted out)
P1747-Electronic press control solenoid short circuit
P0750-Shift solenoid A malfunction
P0755-Shift solenoid B malfunction
P0743-Torque converter clutch circuit electrical
P0443-EVAP emission control system purge control valve circuit malfunction
P1451-EVAP control system vent control valve circuit malfunction
P0135-O2 B1S1 heater circuit malfunction
P0141-O2 B1S2 heater circuit malfunction
P0155-O2 B2S1 heater circuit malfunction
P0161-O2 B2S2 heater circuit malfunction
P1409-EGR EVR control circuit fault
I also found out the the trans supposedly worked when it was swapped but then the engine started running badly and the trans quit at the same time. I called around to see what a replacement tranny would cost and found out that there were two different ones install and they are not interchangable. The one that came out had the number
YL3Z 7000 FA on it. The one in the truck now has the numbers YL3Z 7000 LA. Does this anything to be worried about?
Another thing I noticed while I was looking at the tag was the mysterious O2 plug that was missing is clamped between the block and bellhousing. Can this be the whole problem?
Maybe all this info will help.
Something else I thought of is that I think this is the fourth tranny to be put in this truck. My grandfather was an avid duck hunter and would go through water crossings past the bottom of the doors. I don't think that he would regularly maintain things so the trans could have been getting water in it and he could have never known. The first one was replace at somewhere around 50 or 60k and was changed by the local Ford dealer so I would think that the serial numbers would match. Now as for any of the others that were put in I have no idea if the guys that worked for my grandfather would have known to check these numbers.
So now to my next question, is there any way to check the trans controler to what tranny should be in the truck? Would there be any identifying numbers on the controller like what is on the side of the trans?
Take fuse #23 out and look at it for being blown.
If yes, see if a replacement blows.
If yes, there is a short to ground in the harness or a plug going back to the transmission and OX sensors.
The codes suggest this fuse because it supplies power to all those functions except the cylinder fault.
Ok well in my next to last post I put that I had found the connector for the o2 sensor pinched between the block and trans. I put a lot of info in that post so it could have been easily over looked. But would this be causin the short? And if I get it out of there shouldn't everything go back to working like normal?
You are working with unknowns.
A pinch resulting in a ground will blow the fuse if the lead has 12 volts on it.
With what your working with, expect anything. Your woking on someone elses mess and poor workmanship.
Sort the issues out one at a time until all is cleared with no codes present or driveability issues..
Good luck.
Came in this afternoon and went and cut the wires out from behind the bell housing. I found a replacement o2 harness at work so I can fix that. Cleared the codes and tried to drive the truck. It went into gear and drove for about 100 yards then just quit. I checked the codes again and only had O2 sensor b1s1 and b2s1 fault. Any thoughts?
The trans. I checked both the fuse under the hood and in the dash for the tranny. Fuse 23 under the hood and fuse 29 inside. Both were good. I'm now trying to see if I can't find a number on the TCM. Maybe this will tell me if the trans is the right one.
I found a number on the TCM but I don't know if it is right or not. YL35 NC I think. I looked at it last night and never got a chance to post. I called my uncle this mornin to see if the truck that this transmission came out of still had a good TCM and he said it was in there but he had no idea what condition it was in. I'm wondering if I swap this if it might make a difference. What do you guys think?
Ok I just got back from getting the other TCM. It has different numbers than the one that is in my truck now. But the bad thing is that the truck had burned and the wires going to the TCM were fried. The connector was badly melted as well.
I'm going to try and see if there are any fuses that may effect this tomorrow. I also was wondering why I would still have both oxygen sensors bank 1 and 2 sensors 1 faulty. Should there be a particular fuse I should be looking for? Or maybe some other kind of controller?
Guys I'm at a stand still. The transmission acts like it is gone but then it pulls for a short time and then quits pulling. I don't know what to think!!! I hate when someone who has no idea what they are doing gets elbow deep and makes it all worse than what it was to begin with.
Respectfully, this is often the case.
No background make it tough to work on a complicated system.
To comment further, it sounds like if the trans does work but quits that the wiring to it, is intermittant.
You need to basicly understand that the trans is controlled electically by operating internal solenoid valves to route and control gear shifting and applying fluid pressure to internal channels for routing to clutch servos etc.
The wire harness just happens to also have the leads for the OX sensors since they are also back in that area.
Both Ox senors and the trans control are in trouble
People who butcher up and give up also don't have the background so it ends up in someone elses posession and they have the same thing all over again, so here we are.
I can only help just so much from here.
Good luck..
