Bought a 1990 Ford Ranger monday. It is an automatic. I was wondering how hard an automatic to manual swap would be. The only way I would end up doing this is if my transmission went out.

if you round up ALL of the pieces ahead of time and have them sitting there then it is not all that hard !

Do the M5OD tranny and leave the Mitsu FM145/146 for the scrap pile.

on my ranger, with a whole spare ranger for parts, 1 day for the swap, another day to do all the @#$%^& other parts. Took almost 5 hours to get the clutch pedal out and in the other one (probably the hardest thing on the entire process). Drive shaft will probably need to be cut, but that is 1 day and about $150 USD.

probably easier to get a performance slush box instead.

You had to shorten the driveshaft? The FM146/M5OD is the same as the automatics. I am using an auto driveshaft for my swap, it is 3" shorter than my current FM145 driveshaft.

I think he means $150 to have the driveshaft shortened... runs only $50 here for shorten and balance.

But shouldn't have to get a different driveshaft... the Automatic and FM146/M5OD use the same length drveshaft.

For my own swap from an FM145 manual to M5OD...

M5OD $115 (all used parts from junkyard)
Shifter rebuild kit $15 NEW
Automatic driveshaft (3" shorter) $26
4.0 Flywheel $40 NEW
Clutch kit $90 NEW
Clutch Slave $40 NEW
4.0 engine spacer plate $10

I'll lengthen the front driveshaft myself and fabricate my own linkage system for the transfer case. I want to keep the 1350 transfer case rather than buy another 1354.

for clarification: Parts ranger with blown engine / thrashed body $200. new flywheel/clutch assy $100. Clutch hose assy custom length and fittings $100. since the parts ranger was a stretch 4 wd and used cardigans, neither driveshaft interchanged. I believe the manual box is longer by 3 inches than a A4LD. sold parts ranger to junker netted $200 cash, after removing $200 in pieces parts to fix my ranger.

flip the cross member for the tranny, new mount. Pre 84 or diesels use an external slave assy. Priceless.

A4LD is 3" longer than a manual FM145. A4LD/FM146/M5OD are all the same length.

In my applicaton... single cab, long bed FM145 rear driveshaft is 55" long. A4LD/FM146 driveshaft is 52" long.
