Question 66 EFI conversion on original engine

All original 66 with a 300/4speed. Want to convert to EFI / Aod utilizing the original engine. What do I need and need to modify. Help please.

Sorry to say but your plan. A bad plan is a bad plan, you must have a recent rebuild, that you want to keep.

You can't pull ahead retro fitting the old engine. Buy a mid 90s truck so you can get engine, tranny, computer, gas tank(s), fuel pump, wiring, everything needed for the upgrade.

No need to beat your head against a brick wall, you will find enough issues doing what I suggested.

There are numerous aftermarket, throttle body EFI systems that could work if you can find an intake manifold that will work with them. Holley markets a 2 bbl throttle body kit that would probably be a good fit. You'll need to modify your fuel system with an electric pump and return line. The AOD is not electronically controlled so the transmission swap should not be much of a problem.

I don"t think it would work because the older block isn't the same. I may be wrong but I think the newer ones have a crankshaft sensor as the old ones do not and can not be fitted with one without an expensive add on kit for a tone ring, sensor, not to mention a stand alone module to run that system. could be thousands, I'm with DPhillips, throttle body injection works, and if tuned right helps with cold engine start up too.

The reason for my first post, didn't say it couldn't be done, but like the power steering disc brake upgrade, buying a single donor that has everything needed & prolly for around $500.00 will put you out ahead in the end.

The late 80's rangers ran the crank/cam sensor run off of the crank sensor. If you went that route you could run EDIS as well. However by the time you purchase the ecu, Wiring haness and injectores you will have a bunch of doe tied up in it. Would suggest as others have that a donor vehicle is the way to go. I have a 4.6 ohc motor in my 65 f100. Would never had considered it if I didn't have a donor car.

In 86 when the 300 switched to efi they changed the head and did not drill and machine the fuel pump boss in the block. It used TFI ignition along with the computer and a specific EFI grind cam shaft to use the really long runners to provide torque. No cam sensors were used. They also added auxiliary fan and relays to cool the passenger side of the engine and intake to overheating.

When ford added EFI to the 300 they killed it. You also have to add low and high pressure fuel pumps and the wiring harness. The 88 89 harness is the easiest of the harness to use the way it is laid out.

You can add an aftermarket system like Holley's projection along with a new clifford or offy four barrel intake.

A good tune electronic ignition like a pertronix or MSD or even a duraspark, and a offy dual plane with a 390 CFM holley along with adding a set of EFI exhaust manifolds (they flow better than hedders without the hassle) will allow the 300 to have gobs of torque and to pull mid teens in fuel mileage.

If you did simply pull the old engine and replace it with a modern fuel injected engine, would you will need to have it smogged, or is it exempt because it is in the older truck?

Thanks for the replies. I was originally thinking of the whole Mark VIII drive line conversion. But then I got to thinking that I have an all original truck with only 75000 original miles. That is why I was considering the EFI on the 300. My still go the with the 4.6 but as of 2 days ago, my focus has changed dramatically. I found out that my fiance and I are expecting our first child in August! Merry Christmas to you all.

What an awsome Christmas gift! Congrats too you both.
Other than some holes in the inner fenders and gas tank for the return line I didn't modify my truck for the 4.6. But my truck was a LONG way from original when I got it
