I have a Chilton's manual for my 1973 F250, but is seems a little short on details. Since I am pretty new to the world of old trucks, I have seen reference to the original Ford service manuals. My first question is, is it worth getting my hands on these manuals in order to do the work myself, or are they not that necessary? Second, where to find them? I found a set on ebay for $100 for all 5 volumes, but at the same time, electronic would be just fine too.
I think shop manuals are great, and are orders of magnitude better than Chilton's. Whether or not they'll be more useful than what you've got depends on what you're doing.
I've bought used shop manuals from eBay before; you can also get them on CD, also available on eBay. I personally prefer hard copy, otherwise you have to print stuff out and take it into the garage (or keep walking back and forth to the computer).
Another item that most people are not aware of are parts manuals. They give great exploded views of different assemblies. They show you details of how things are assembled. This comes in handy when you have stacks of items like seals, spacers and washers all stacked together.
Thanks for the replies. I had found the parts manual on CD from HiPo a couple of weeks ago, but wasn't sure how beneficial that would be. I figured the shop manual would be useful too, just wanted someone to confirm before I spent the money.
I had my last 73 stolen 11 years ago, and in that time I have forgotten everything I ever used to know. Been waiting patiently to get back into these old trucks, and now that my son is nearly 9 and showing an interest, this was the time. The plan is to take it all apart and put it all back together, just for the experience. I am not looking to restore it per-se, nor am I going to trick it out.
I am so glad that I came across FTE! It is my new addiction

The 1973/79 Ford LIGHT Truck Parts Catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com.
This catalog includes F100/500, Econoline, P Series Parcel Delivery and M450/500 Motor Homes, but...it does not include Bronco.
Bronco's are listed in the Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalogs (1965/72 & 1973/79) thru 1979.
Hipo Parts also has these catalogs and many others / For 1973/79 600 series and larger trucks: 1973/79 Ford HEAVY Truck Parts Catalog.
All shop and owners manuals, parts catalogs, vacuum and electrical diagrams were printed for FoMoCo by Helm.
Helm (helminc.com) still has some of these manuals (not the parts catalogs) available for certain years.
For used manuals, electrical/vacuum diagrams, sales and accessory brochures, salesmans fact books and etc try: faxonautolit.com / While Faxon sells on ebay, he also has a store located in Riverside CA

I've just bought a 77 4x4 and have a set of the manuals for 77 model year on CD, don't know how they match up to a 73 but I would be glad to give you a copy.
