The Final Rule: Exhaust system
I knew the day was coming and it came today…while in a funeral procession no less. My system dropped to the ground after the flange/bracket at the rear of the cat broke off. The dying/dead exhaust system is the original equipment, lasting almost 12 years in the NE snowbelt so no complaints from me. Now I need to replace it (cat. on back).
Over the last few months, I’ve done lots of reading and web searching on replacement exhaust systems. My aim was twofold: 1) replace the OE system due to age, 2) replace it with an exhaust system that might help me achieve improved performance (hp and mpg). What I’ve come to learn is that on the hp front, an aftermarket exhaust will do nothing or more likely, reduce the hp. On the mpg side of things, I’ve read mixed reviews, so the vote here is likely still out.
Many aftermarket solutions are out there, all with claims of improved performance. No data – just claims. I’m also not after ‘noisy’ exhaust systems: lots of Youtube videos with various aftermarket systems. I’m thankful that they are out there as it provided some feedback on what a system would sound like on my truck, steering me away from most solutions out there. But I’m still trying to drive to the bottom line on what to do.
So, what have been your experiences with your Ranger exhaust systems (ideally, with your 4 cylinder Ranger)?
Thanks!
Kevin
Buy Walker Flange Repair Kit - Fits 2" OD Pipe 36132 at Advance Auto Parts
As far as a aftermarket exhaust, the kit I installed
Summit Racing SUM-680032 - Summit Racing® Cat-Back Exhaust Systems - Overview - SummitRacing.com
but I had to buy a walker #43184 (through rock auto--couldn't get a link to work) intermediate pipe in addition to the flange repair kit.
The 2-3" adaptor had to be welded in because the clamp would not hold it tight enough. I was afraid of the muffler/tailpipe rotatating and hitting the shock or body. No big deal for me as I have a stick welder.
In addition to that,I did not read the instructions which would have told me I was missing a clamp, which required a few beers to come up with a solution on how to hang the tailpipe.
The kit, however, worked good for me. Power went up and fuel economy stayed the same. I can stay in 5th longer on the highway and going up hills is much improved. Does not sound bad with the no-name turbo muffler either.
However, I really can't recommend it to you based upon what I went through to install it.
And the 3" tailpipe looks bad in my opinion.

-Instructions as a means of putting things together is highly over-rated!!!
The thing about things that appear intuitive enough to skip the instructions sometimes results in a few cuss words and unnecessary angst. I'm a master at that as are most guys I suppose.
Thanks for the links Grumpy. The clamp might have worked but in an effort to tie the muffler/tailpipe assy up, my brother bent the pipe so even if I were to have tried the solution, the pipe looks its age and needs replacing too. I figure that I would go stock unless some here believes a better option exists. I thought about Midas/Monroe as a solution, but I've not read much on their products and whether the quality and sound is where it needs to be.
My brother and I can appreciate using beer to figure it out though; clears the head (until morning).
Phinxter - I looked out of curiosity, but when I did, I don't recall finding a solution out there, but from my reading here/elsewhere, folks suggest that the stock solution works best when considering the quality of the casting and heat. For now, just looking for the exhaust/muffler solution that will work best.

The shop told me 25% larger for the exhaust is all you can do so thats why I have a 2 inch sytem from the Y back, a 4cyl would be from the manifold flange. I used to average around 19-21 mpg at 75 mph on the highway, still get arounf 15 in town as I dont have a long commute anymore. So if you need an exhaust sytem check a local indy shop to see what they have to offer for they system, mine ran around $400 total with another $100 for the intake.
